Duties

Function as a Licensed Professional Engineer that provides consulting services for domestic and industrial wastewater treatment. Apply design concepts to the following processes: physical/chemical primary treatment, conventional activated sludge, biological nutrient removal (ammonia and phosphorus), fixed film processes, digestion, treatment intensification, decarbonization, membrane bio-reactors (MBR), sidestream treatment, tertiary filtration and disinfection. Under limited supervision, develop and apply wastewater treatment and engineering techniques, concepts and approaches to complex engineering problems for treatment of domestic and industrial wastewater. Lead and direct less experienced staff on tasks such as overseeing data collection, assimilation, analysis and management of data for process modeling and design work.  Prepare a variety of complex engineering deliverables, including process models, process/mass balance calculations, design criteria/basis of design memoranda, process flow diagrams, P&IDs, tradeoff studies, and master planning studies.  Support multiple projects simultaneously with complex technical challenges.  Serve as a technical specialist with knowledge and skillset providing guidance to design teams in conventional and/or emerging wastewater treatment concepts. Perform complex research to select or assess performance of treatment processes and incorporate the data into process models. Work collaboratively with engineering design team to develop recommendations for appropriate treatment processes, equipment and their specification, and/or material selection. Prepare process models and carry out complex engineering calculations following standard methods and principles. Develop life-cycle assessment, including conceptual-level life-cycle costs, and environmental and social benefits, to evaluate and select resilient treatment solutions. Actively coordinate with internal and external team members for successful project execution. Assist with identification of key client interests and drivers for ongoing projects and new business prospects. Develop creative solutions and approaches to accommodate our client’s goals and objectives. Learn and share current knowledge of latest technology and processes for wastewater treatment within internal or external clients.  Attend and present on state-of-the-art wastewater treatment projects and thought leadership ideas at local, regional, and national conferences. Assist in developing, maintaining, and updating engineering standards. Apply knowledge and complies with BV quality program relative to assigned tasks. Provide related guidance and direction to more junior team members. Support continuous improvement and change management efforts. Demonstrate strong technical writing skills and effective communication. Self-manage budget, schedule, and quality requirements for assigned tasks. Requires

Master’s degree in Civil Engineering with Environmental Engineering emphasis, Chemical Engineering with Environmental Engineering emphasis, Environmental Engineering, or related discipline, plus at least four years of related consulting experience in municipal wastewater process engineering. Alternatively, the employer will accept a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering with Environmental Engineering emphasis, Chemical Engineering with Environmental Engineering emphasis, Environmental Engineering, or related discipline, plus at least five years of related consulting experience in municipal wastewater process engineering. PE required. Related experience must include wastewater physical chemical (pH, alkalinity, and chemical precipitation) and biological kinetic models Biowin, GPS-X, and SUMO Process simulation packages. Must have at least 2 years’ experience developing whole wastewater plant model simulations, calibration and validation of the model using operational data, and manipulation of the model for future challenge conditions including changes in liquid flow, solid loading, biological oxygen demand, ammonia or phosphorus. Must have experience working with engineering design principles and applicable design guides and standards related to both small (1 million gallon per day average daily flow) and large (greater than 50 million gallon per day average daily flow) wastewater treatment projects. Must have experience leading evaluations to select and recommend wastewater treatment process and design values for treatment of wastewater liquid stream, solids, main-stream and sidestream nutrients (ammonia and phosphorus), decarbonization, and energy recovery. Must have experience working with utility owners to communicate the design and operational envelop and impacts of the recommended solution.  Must have experience leading development of wastewater facility design memorandum, equipment and technology trade-off studies, and life-cycle cost evaluations. Telecommuting is permissible within a reasonable commuting distance from the Houston, Texas Black and Veatch Office.  Up to 10 % travel may be required.  Must have good written and verbal communications skills in English.  All applicants must be able to complete pre-employment onboarding requirements (if selected) which may include any/all of the following: criminal/civil background check, drug screen, and motor vehicle records search, in compliance with any applicable laws and regulations.
