The PICC Line Nurse will assess and perform an overall evaluation of the patient. Responsible for placement of the line and ensure the line placement is correctly inserted.
**TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:**
+ Ability to work independently.
+ Communicates effectively and appropriately to patient, family and other health care providers.
+ Provides patient education about the PICC (or midline) insertion and the care and maintenance issues post insertion
+ Participates in performance improvement activities
+ Demonstrates ability to assess patient past and current medical history including laboratory values, venous and muscle skeletal status that is pertinent in qualifying a patient as a candidate for PICC placement.
+ Assures physicians order on chart for PICC placement.
+ Assures Informed Consent has been obtained.
+ Performs time out; correct patient identifier prior to initiating PICC procedure.
+ Demonstrates ability to perform PICC placement maintaining aseptic technique utilizing measures that prevent patient discomfort and trauma related to procedure.
+ Demonstrates high level skills in critical thinking and assessment related to vascular access devices.
+ Maintains clinical competency by inserting a minimum of six PICCs/year
+ Documents insertion of PICC (or midline) per ministry standards
**Summary of Primary Function/General Purpose of Position**
The Infusion Registered Nurse (RN) provides, coordinates, plans and evaluates the care of the patient within established nursing process framework. Evaluation is done through data collection, assessment, identification and prioritization of patient problems/needs including evaluating process/outcome of nursing care, intervention and teaching. The RN coordinates, provides and directs patient teaching activities.
**Essential Job Function**
• Conducts and analyzes initial and ongoing patient assessment, creates plan of care, implements treatments and evaluates treatment effectiveness.
• Administers medication and blood products in a safe manner consistent with the State of Practice and Bon Secours Mercy Health policies and procedures.
• Serves as a point of contact for patients care coordination, acts as a patient safety advocate by participating in ongoing quality improvement, and collaborates with spiritual care, palliative and ethics when needed.
• Incorporates the professional practice model in care delivery and serves as a point person for care coordination for family members or caregivers.
• Restores, supports, promotes, rehabilitates, or palliates to maintain the physiologic, psychologic and psychosocial stability of patients across the lifespan.
• Synthesizes and prioritizes information in order to take immediate and decisive evidenced-based, patient focused action using clinical judgement and clinical inquiry.
• Anticipates and responds with confidence and adapts to rapidly changing patient conditions.
• Responds to the unique needs of the patients and families coping with unanticipated illness or injury and treatment and advocates for their choice in quality of life.
• Assists in creating an environment that promotes educational growth opportunities for nursing peers.
• Administers chemotherapy and other medication, starts IV's, transfuses blood and blood products and performs therapeutic phlebotomies.
• BSMH nurses are expected to practice and deliver care in accordance with the core concepts and intention of the BSMH Nursing Professional Practice Model.

**Licensing/Certification**
Current RN License in the state in which they are working or covered by compact (required)
BLS Basic Life Support (preferred upon hire, must obtain from approved source prior to direct patient care; ACLS Advanced Cardiac Life Support acceptable in lieu of BLS)
ONS Oncology Nursing Society Chemotherapy Certification (required within 6 months of hire)
ACLS Advanced Cardiac Life Support (preferred)
ONCC Oncology Nursing Certification Corporation (preferred)
INCC Infusion Nurses Certification Cooperation (preferred)
CRNI Certified Registered Nurse Infusion (preferred)
**Education**
Bachelor of Science Nursing (preferred)
**Work Experience**
1 year of medical/surgical or oncology experience (preferred)
**Training**
EPIC Electronic Health Record (EHR) (preferred)
