Principal Research Scientist

Who we are

With its A.I.-powered robotic technology platform, Symbotic is changing the way consumer goods move through the supply chain. Intelligent software orchestrates advanced robots in a high-density, end-to-end system – reinventing warehouse automation for increased efficiency, speed and flexibility.

What we need

Symbotic is looking for Principal Research Scientist who is familiar with a fleet of robots that works in a warehouse moving resources into storage and from storage out to palettes for shipping. They are expert on how to optimize the rate at which items are moved in and out of the warehouse the algorithm needs to balance including what tasks need to be done, what bots and structure resources exist and what state they are in, and what inventory resources are eligible for each task and how preferable they are to use for long-term inventory goals.

What we do

The fleet orchestration organization writes software that helps to optimize the usage of all warehouse resources and fulfill orders in the most efficient manner.  The services are the control hub, communicating with databases and robots.

What you’ll do

Develop practical algorithms for optimized utilization of multi-robot resources in a 3D warehouse environment

Research, develop, and productize solutions for NP-Hard optimization problems using combinatorial optimization or AI

Document and present potential algorithm solutions to the engineering tasking team and wider engineering teams

Develop software to test and model algorithms, taking account of resources such as available computer and memory

Support the team to implement the algorithms into production level code including testing, QA and bug fixing

Utilize and structure large data collections to train, debug and test algorithms

Keep updated with latest optimization research through conferences and papers

Analyze algorithms running in a production environment and collect KPIs to track solution quality

What you’ll need

PhD in AI, Mathematics, Signal Processing or equivalent

Minimum 3 years professional experience developing solutions for optimization problems

Experience solving NP-Hard scheduling problems for real world applications

Practical experience with mathematical optimization techniques such as Linear and Mixed Integer Programming

Experience creating plots and visualizations from production data using tools like Kibana, Tableau, Python libraries, etc.

Experience with PyTorch, TensorFlow or OpenCV

Team player, able to provide input and guidance to the software tasking team

Bonus points!

A hands-on problem solver with excellent software design and implementation skills

Experience with developing unit tests and test automation frameworks

Should be comfortable with asynchronous or multithread programming

Experience analyzing large data sets

Our environment

Up to 10% of travel may be required. Employees must have a valid driver’s license and the ability to drive and/or fly to client and other customer locations.

The employee is responsible for owning a credit card and managing expenses personally to be reimbursed on a bi-weekly basis.
