The Principal Broadcast Engineer will spearhead the studio engineering efforts of Blue Origin’s expanding digital broadcast team. Collaborating closely with our head of Marketing Technology, this role will conceptualize, implement, and maintain state-of-the-art production systems both in our Washington and Florida studios and in the cloud in REMI based broadcasts. The Principal Broadcast Engineer will engage with both external and internal stakeholders to assess, recommend and implement technologies/systems that optimize our studio/remote productions. Responsibilities include managing IP frameworks, signal flow/workflow documentation, integration of studio on-prem and cloud networks, and network architecture required to support multi-site systems.

Key Responsibilities:

Design and implement digital broadcasting workflows, leveraging advanced technologies across on-prem, hybrid, and cloud-based production systems to create superior broadcast experiences.

Develop and execute technical broadcast planning, including network planning, encoder validation, test broadcasts, and contingency/redundancy planning for high-tier streams.

Manage and distribute live content to platforms like AWS IVS, YouTube, and X.com.

Develop scalable, reliable, and efficient digital broadcast systems using protocols such as NDI, SDI, RTMP, and RTSP.

Utilize cloud platforms like AWS MediaLive for seamless integration, focusing on reducing latency and enhancing broadcast quality.

Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including software development and infrastructure, to optimize broadcasting solutions.

Proactively identify and troubleshoot live broadcast issues, ensuring minimal disruption and high-quality service delivery.

Mentor and guide other engineers, contributing to a culture of innovation and excellence.

Facilitate cross-team information sharing and technical training for all new operating systems and technical solutions.

Configure and maintain SDI and other IP video sources, distribution infrastructure, and other production systems within the studio environment.

Deploy and maintain cloud-based production systems and IT infrastructure for expanded control room support, ensuring scalability and compliance with industry protocols.

Collaborate with internal production teams on new workflows and features to seamlessly integrate new production systems in the studio.

Draft and present clear business narratives, strategies, and standard operating procedures to leadership and cross-functional teams to improve production quality and response times.

Provide technical reviews and summaries for major events, ensuring roadmap prioritization of broadcast/streaming concerns and issues.

Lead Security Reviews and Product Roadmap Reviews for new software/hardware solutions in collaboration with cross-functional teams.

Demonstrate entrepreneurial spirit, excellent judgment, and communication skills while delivering innovative solutions and building a team capable of implementing superior workflow systems

Basic Qualifications:

10+ years of experience in broadcast and live tv such as sports, events, and news with a combination of on-location and REMI production.

5+ years of broadcast experience in technology domains such as broadcast technologies, software development, cloud computing, systems engineering, infrastructure, security, networking, data & analytics.

Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, mathematics, broadcast engineering or equivalent.

Proven ability to communicate across technical and non-technical audiences, including executive-level presentations and workshops.

Extensive experience with broadcast standards, workflows, routing, switching, encoding, audio processing, and distribution.

Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to a culture of inclusion 

Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.  

Preferred Qualifications:

Knowledge of distributed systems design and implementation.

Experience with large-scale automation and workflow management.

Experience with IP-based broadcast systems including NDI, SRT, RTMP, RTSP, AWS MediaLive, Tricaster, LiveU, and others.

Proven experience in architecting, migrating, transforming, or modernizing customer requirements to the cloud.

Strong presentation skills and comfort speaking with executives and technical teams.

Proficiency in core routing, switching design, configuration, troubleshooting, and understanding of video stream metadata.


 

Compensation Range for:

WA applicants is $207,453.00-$290,433.15
