CONTEXT

The purpose of the Marketing Business is to sustainably maximise cash flows from the marketing of Anglo American products and services. In support of this, we have set ourselves a target to deliver a material uplift in value.

A critical focus within the business are our core commodities across Base Metals and Iron Ore. Being able to capture, develop and execute to secure purchases of 3rd party products has been defined as one of the priorities to achieving our ambitions.

PURPOSE

To lead Sourcing and Origination (S&O) reviews and schedule an integrated investment/ risk assurance process to optimise value and reduce risk.

The role will provide clear pathways on helping the business to visualise and assess, in particular technical risk and:

Ensure that all deals are assessed based on the following principles:

Aligned with Marketing and Anglo American strategyTechnical and ESG drivers throughout deal lifecycleMaximise returns on a risk-adjusted basis with clear reference to reference to internal hurdle rates and trading desk demand requirementsDeveloped in accordance with a consistent framework with clear technical/ financial criteria

Preparation of investment memos and papers and to provide an independent opinion on whether an investment proposition is ready to progress to the next stage and ensures high quality assurance assessments based on a combined technical, commercial, and financial evaluation of the investment proposal.

KEY TASKS

Leadership

To lead the preparation and content aggregation for Sourcing & Origination reviews, inclusive of long and short term capital proposals.Drive decision making and business tools to support the advancement of investment proposalsEffectively share knowledge to support and drive continuous improvement in Marketing and provide coaching to Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) as appropriate

Execution and Target Delivery

Prepare and schedule deal management in line with Sourcing & Origination guidelines and internal governanceProvide and incorporate technical value drives and assessment from concept phase through to final due diligence.Early stage identification of potential “technical key issues” and stage gate resource deployment accordinglyScenario adjust risk assessment of deal returns linked to key technical milestonesLead drafting of Marketing Capital Memos and other relevant investment papersResponsible for resourcing of reviews with the appropriate Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) from across the business or externally according to review scopeCollate and present SME reviewers’ reports (inclusive of findings, key technical risks, opportunities, and recommendations)Engagement with and management of all stakeholder expectations throughout review (providing regular feedback as appropriate)Identify, report and comment on key technical issues, risks and opportunities for value add within area of expertise and impact thereof on the operation and/or projectEnsure consistent and high-quality assessments on an ongoing basis, including stress testing opportunity economics and sensitivities through evaluation of realistic key driversSupport execution and scaling of the Sourcing & Origination strategy for all Commodities (and initiatives that may arise) including potential deals and alternatives to de-risk, syndicate and re-finance existing exposures.Provide assurance with regards to the viability of investment proposals and make recommendations based on the techno economic evaluation of the proposal as to whether investment opportunity meets requirements to progress to the next stageDeliver high quality reviews of greenfield and brownfield projects globally across our core commodities (Iron Ore/ Base Metals) and support activity in the third party steel-making coal bookAbility to develop and vet financial modelsSupport Marketing Head of Origination to develop, strengthen and manage existing and new counterparty relationships (finance institutions, insurance, banks, investment, debt and private equity funds, logistics providers etc) globally, allowing for sustainable future pursuit of Origination related dealsProvide support as required on Post Deal Management (PDM)

Organisation and Growth

Institutionalise interaction with AA unique technical skills (i.e. technical, corporate finance, production, corporate affairs)

Stakeholder Management

Support Marketing Head of Origination to co-lead Commodity Marketing Teams (CMT) origination teams in providing technical pre and post-sales support to counterpartiesDevelop and maintain collaborative relationships with key internal stakeholdersWork closely with commodity marketing teams and functions across Marketing business to identify new business opportunities and build valuable relationships

Risk and Governance

Deliver in support of the Origination strategy in alignment with CMT Sourcing/ Origination strategy within Marketing’s defined risk and governance framework.Continuously improve the governance procedures that would ensure origination activities operate in a controlled risk environment.Coach others to embed a zero-breach culture.

Qualifications

Knowledge

In depth technical knowledge of one or more relevant technical disciplines (e.g. Mining, Engineering, Geosciences or Processing), as well as knowledge in one or two key functional areas across the Project Management life cycle (from studies through execution and into operations)Integrated investment assurance knowledge to optimise value and reduce risk within a global mining organisationStrong understanding and application of investment/ origination practices and approaches within the mining/ extractives industryStrong data modelling and presentation capabilities, ability to confidently navigate and interrogate client data rooms.Strong knowledge of risk management within an investment assurance contextUnderstanding of associated risks to mining/commodity financing transactions.Deal structures: Strong understanding of capital structures that minimise exposure to capex, opex, commodity prices and performance risk.Strong understanding of commodity industry participants, global trade flows and financing structures.Origination Skills: Able to support the development of opportunities through deal structure and mitigating financial and technical risks to match the risk profile of the business.Understanding of general debt / equity structures (gearing) , streaming and prepayment structures and royalties and how they are modelled and when can be prioritised over other each otherCommercially minded, innovative mindset and openness to new ideas.Understanding of theories and principles of international commodity marketing and sales.Modelling knowledge and skills – ability to apply a number of financing strategies and sensitivity scenarios to negotiate the best possible deal structures and outcomes.Understands ESG criteria and their incorporation into investment decision-making for responsible investing at AA.
