ABOUT THE JOB: Persons in these positions work 3 hours per day, Monday - Friday, during the school session. Under general supervision of a preschool teacher or administrator, assists instructional personnel and provides care, supervision and learning activities to pre-school age children enrolled in a District preschool program; provides learning and play experiences to individual students and small groups; performs related duties as assigned.
JOB DUTIES: Assists in the set-up and preparation of learning materials and activities designed for learning, as directed by teacher; uses positive reinforcement strategies and other techniques to assist students in the development of appropriate behavior; assists students in the development of independence, self-help, performance skills, and basic social skills, as designated by teacher; assists with meals and snacks as assigned; participates in the preparation and serving of food items and set-up/clean-up of tables; sanitary and orderly outdoor environment; maintains a positive, nurturing environment, which respects culture and diversity; sanitizes and disinfects toys, tables, chairs, and other classroom surfaces; supervises and monitors students while in the bathroom; and assists students with personal hygiene and grooming as needed; provides assistance to students with washing, diaper changing and toileting, and other personal care activities as needed; assists in the sign-in and sign-out procedures for ensuring the safety of students and compliance with state and licensing regulations as needed; assists teacher with the preparation of instructional materials and implementation of lesson plans; assists the teacher with data collection for assessments; attends trainings and meetings for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform functions and receiving updated child development current best practice information.

Education and Experience: High school diploma or equivalent and completion of at least six units of Early Childhood Education courses covering Child Growth and Development and Child, Family, and Community to be completed within one year of appointment. Some experience working with young people is required. Any other combination of training and experience which would likely provide the required skills, knowledge and abilities may be considered. All candidates must meet the federal Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) requirement for this position. You can meet the ESSA requirement through possession of an associate’s degree or higher or have completed at least 48 full semester units. Please attach a copy of your degree or college transcripts to your application if you meet these criteria.
Special Note: Some positions may require up to twelve units of Early Childhood Education courses and some positions require verbal fluency in a language other than English. Must possess and provide proof of Tdap, MMR, and Influenza vaccine or waiver. Possession of valid First Aid Certificate and a Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation Certificate (through classes endorsed by the American Heart Association or American Red Cross) desirable.
A SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE REQUIRES THE FOLLOWING….
Knowledge of: Concepts of child growth, development and behavior characteristics of pre-school age children; student behavior management strategies and techniques; program policies, practices, and philosophy; basic child psychology and development; early childhood center licensing rules, requirements and regulations; health, safety, and nutrition requirements of children; appropriate safety precautions and procedures; interpersonal skills using tact, patience, and courtesy; oral and written communication skills; correct English usage, including spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
Ability to: Appropriately manage student behavior and guide students toward acceptable social behavior; implement learning activities for children; maintain a healthy and safe environment; understand and follow oral and written instructions; monitor and assist students; demonstrate an understanding, patient, warm and receptive attitude toward children; understand and apply rules, regulations, procedures and policies; communicate effectively in the English language, both in oral and written form; maintain confidentiality of sensitive and privileged information; establish and maintain effective positive working relationships with students, staff, parents, teachers, and administrators.
