Power Plant Operator/Power Generation Technician

 Duty station:  Primary: Al Asad Air Base, Iraq

 Under the direction of:  Plant Manager

 The Operator/Generator Technician will carry out the following duties and responsibilities in order of priority:

 Major duties and responsibilities:

Serves as a power plant operator who distributes and controls electrical energy through a primary electrical distribution system connecting a moderate number of transformers and switching stations. The power system serves industrial and commercial, office or residential users. The system is characterized by stable load demands and predictable degree and timing of variations.Operate switchboard controls to start, stop, cut in and out, and synchronize diesel-electric generators to provide power or meet peak power demands. Detect improper line voltage, open circuits, or similar conditions from meter readings in the control room and adjust controls, such as changing transformer taps, or directing work crews to switch feeders in or out.  Assist mechanics and high voltage electricians in the routine maintenance and repairs of gensets, transformers and switchgear, and distribution system.  Execute the company’s policy and procedure for proper and efficient operation of the power plants in IraqServe as a Senior Diesel Mechanic for the Operation and Maintenance (O&M) services of prime power plant and client interface at the primary location – Al Asad Air Base, IraqReport to the Plant Manager all special occurrences such as emergency outages and corrective actions taken to maintain service. Anticipate unscheduled load changes, and detect early indications of equipment malfunctions in order to maintain continuous service;Troubleshoot and overhaul, rebuild, or make comparable major repairs to Gensets, powered support systems, including the major components (e.g., engines, generators, alternators, gears, compressors, and hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical components) of the following:Power Pant generation equipment, Standard Diesel power generatorstransformers, switchgears, Emergency power supply units, HVAC units, And other support powered system. A thorough knowledge of the mechanical and electrical makeup and operation of powered support systems such as those described above, including their major mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic components; Troubleshoot and repair diesel, gasoline, and/or multi-fuel engines (e.g., overhauling those of 3 to 8 cylinders and up to 3MW of power or making less extensive repairs to larger, more complex engines);Assist in maintaining electrical power through the power plant and primary distribution system, and in the operation of the central switchboard to actuate remotely controlled circuit breakers, transformers, and switches in order to regulate and maintain proper voltage on the distribution lines;Perform the overhaul, installation, maintenance, modification, and repair of various types of electronically controlled industrial power generation equipment;Apply knowledge of electronic theory and circuits and basic logic circuits to power, timing, and motion controls, indicating and counting mechanisms, and similar devices to troubleshoot, maintain, and repair power plant controls and electronics equipment;Utilize judgment in interpreting guidelines such as load shedding priority schedule, operating criteria of equipment, schematics, and wiring diagrams;When malfunctions occur, assist the Plant Manager to isolate and bypass the fault in order to maintain service or take actions to shed low priority loads when full service cannot be maintained;Plan controls operating programs, and make periodic inspections of the power plant controls and other devices to insure smooth functioning; Execute the company’s policy and procedure for proper and efficient operation of the power plants in Iraq;As directed by the Plant Manager;Other duties as determined. 

Specific duties and responsibilities:

Monitors the distribution of electric power to various distribution points;Operates switchboard controls to adjust remotely controlled circuit breakers, transformers, and switches to regulate and maintain proper voltage on the distribution lines and at the power generation plant;Report abnormal operating conditions and reroute power through alternate feeders to user areas in case of emergency cutouts or extensive scheduled repair;Notifies repair crews of the location of failure and assure that circuits are open and tagged before work is started;Keeps an hourly log of meter readings and records shutdowns, connection and disconnection of circuits, and similar occurrences;Abide by and adhere to all requirements in General Order #1 in conformity with US military standards and practices;Follow all Versar standard policies and practices. 

Essential qualifications:

Experience in managing medium to large scale O&M prime power diesel gensets and controls;A thorough knowledge of the mechanical and electrical makeup and operation of powered support systems such as those described above, including their major mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic components.Standard Diesel generatorsControlsSwitchgearAbility to read and use technical manuals, illustrations, diagrams, schematics, and similar guides covering the complete assembly, troubleshooting, and layout of powered support systems; Experienced working in international work environments in an expatriate or US military status. 

Desirable qualifications:

Experience in providing prime power O&M Services to clients;Experience in Iraq.
