Postdoctoral Research Associate, Department of Surgery

The Department of Surgery in the School of Medicine at the University of Virginia seeks a Postdoctoral Research Associate to work in the Surgical Oncology clinical outcomes research group of Drs. Allan Tsung and Samantha Ruff. 

The successful candidate will:

Participate in the planning, design, execution, and management of clinical research projects that may include retrospective chart review, statistical analysis of large databases, and work with artificial intelligence to leverage large volumes of data to evaluate clinical outcomesOversee additional clinical projects by other lab members and contribute to the methodology, analysis, and writing of these manuscriptsParticipate in planning, design, execution, and management of research projects in a foundational (basic) biological/health science research laboratory investigating cancer in the Comprehensive Cancer CenterParticipate in developing and implementing goals and objectives of studiesDesign and execute complex laboratory experimentsPerform advanced molecular and cellular techniquesCollect, analyze, and interpret research dataAssist with development and implementation of new and/or revised research methodologies and techniquesTest experimental designs, sampling techniques, and analytical methods and make recommendations for utilizationAssist in establishment of controls, criteria and research standardsPerform critical analysis of literature relevant to research being undertakenAssist in the preparation of research papers and manuscripts for publication and presentation at national and conferences and workshops, and in the writing of project reports, articles and other documentsAssist principal investigator in the preparation of proposals to obtain new or renewal of extramural funding in support of researchCoordinate laboratory activities and work assignments of research scientists, graduate and undergraduate students, and laboratory research staffOversee and coordinate periodic maintenance and testing of laboratory equipmentPerform additional duties as assigned

Postdoctoral employment is temporary and is normally limited to an individual who has been awarded a Ph.D. or equivalent doctorate within the previous five years and who will be involved in full-time research or scholarship at the University. Employment as a Postdoctoral Research Associate is viewed as training and is preparatory for a full-time academic or research career, is supervised by a senior scholar, and allows the appointee to publish the results of his/her research or scholarship during the training period.

The position is a 12-month appointment with the possibility of renewal contingent upon satisfactory performance and the availability of funding.

Minimum Qualifications:
Qualified candidates must have a PhD or MD (or international equivalent) in an appropriate biological/health science by the appointment start date. Ability to translate, adapt and apply academic and/or practical knowledge in the conduct of biological/health science research is required. Experience in a biological/health science research capacity is preferred.

The position will remain open until filled.  This is an exempt-level, benefitted position. The University will perform background checks on all new hires prior to employment.  A pre-employment health screening is required. This position is located in Charlottesville, VA.
