Purpose

The Young Lab at the University of Texas at Austin’s Department of Integrative Biology is seeking a highly motivated and collaborative individual to lead an undergraduate research initiative focused on the genomic basis of complex trait development and evolution. This role is part of the Freshman Research Initiative (FRI) and specifically the EvoDevOmics research group. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in evolutionary, developmental, or organismal biology and experience with next-generation sequencing (NGS) data analysis. They should be capable of training undergraduate students in computational techniques and eager to contribute to a hands-on, experiential learning environment.

This position offers a unique opportunity to assume a leadership role while fostering professional growth, encouraging scientific inquiry, and contributing to research aimed at uncovering the genomic mechanisms behind the origin and evolution of complex traits.

Responsibilities

Develop and pursue novel research questions and approaches toward understanding the developmental and evolutionary origins of complex traits with undergraduate and graduate researchers

Organize, train and mentor undergraduate researchers associated with the Freshman Research Initiative’s EvoDevOmics research group (https://fri.cns.utexas.edu/research-streams/evodevomics)

Dissemination of results to scientists and the general public via software code and tools, publications, reports, and presentations

Required Qualifications

PhD in a relevant field within 3 years prior to the effective employment date

R programming and multivariate statistics including experience with large datasets

Demonstrated interest in mentoring and training undergraduate researchers

A track record of documented productivity including publishing in scientific journals

Excellent communication skills

Excellent organizational and problem-solving skills

Strong work ethic and ability to plan, prioritize and multitask

Ability to work with others and a strong commitment to maintain an environment of respect and professionalism

Preferred Qualifications

Preference will be given to candidates with significant experience in undergraduate research mentoring and experience in bioinformatics, evolution, and molecular biology instruction

Salary Range

$65,000 + depending on qualifications

Retirement Plan Eligibility:

The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
