The Hogg Foundation for Mental Health, a grantmaking entity in the Division of Campus and Community Engagement at the University of Texas at Austin, is seeking a postdoctoral fellow to focus on the intersectionality of racial justice and the drivers of mental health, providing access to information to reduce stigma, and addressing a major gap in access to data and information on our mental healthcare system.  The fellowship at the foundation is a two-year, project-based learning opportunity for a recent graduate who wants to apply their knowledge towards community well-being in Texas.  

 

Purpose 

  

The fellowship will expand the foundation’s capacity to understand and raise awareness about the social and political determinants of mental health.  

  

Responsibilities 

Co-design a research agenda with relevant stakeholders and identify meaningful information that could deepen understanding of the drivers of health and mental health as well as offer solutions for overcoming the root causes of health and mental health disparities and inequities in Texas and the nation.Conduct literature reviews, analyze data, and/or synthesize research that supports the goals of the foundation, grant partners, and stakeholders. Develop publications, such as journal articles and blog posts, that contribute to the body of knowledge about the intersectionality of racial justice and the drivers of health and mental health. Create summaries and data visualization for grant partners and members of the public. Assist in the meeting design, facilitation, and synthesize the lessons learned for the Dialogues on Mental Health Records project.Participate in foundation-wide activities, group learning, and cross-unit committees. 

 

  Required Qualifications  

PhD (received within the past three years) Strong understanding of health and mental health disparities and inequities. Excellent research and analysis skills Interest in community-led, culturally responsive, applied research (or other similar methodologies)Experience in health services research.

 

Preferred Qualifications 

Experience with applied research activities. Strong ability to write for multiple audiences. Willingness to use one’s own life experience in professional settings, to bring various ideas and background to strategic learning conversations.   Interest in the history of health sciences, mental illness, and treatment and recovery.

 

Salary Range 

$60,000 + depending on qualifications

 

Working Conditions 

Standard office environment. Work requires the use of a computer daily.Travel is required at times and is supported when appropriate and needed to achieve goals.

Retirement Plan Eligibility:

The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
