The UHealth system at the University of Miami has an exciting opportunity for a full time Post Doctoral Associate in the Public Health Sciences Department.

SUMMARY

The Post Doctoral Associate performs scientific research and studies under the supervision of managing staff. Moreover, the Post Doctoral Associate promotes institutional recognition through literal contributions to the scientific community.

CORE JOB FUNCTIONS        

1.    Conducts research on specific areas of study as assigned.
2.    Prepares research reports and technical papers for publishing.
3.    Investigates the feasibility of applying a wide variety of scientific principles and theories.
4.    Maintains substantial knowledge of state-of-the-art principles and theories.
5.    Develops advanced analytical models and systems and provides solutions and analyses to support strategic and tactical decisions.
6.    Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

MD or Ph.D. in relevant field

DEPARTMENT ADDENDUM

Department Specific Functions

1.    Research and Analysis: Conduct advanced research in exposure science related to firefighter occupational hazards. Develop and apply analytical methods to assess chemical exposures in various environmental/occupational and biological matrices.
2.    Data Collection and Interpretation: Design and implement field studies to collect exposure data from firefighter populations. Analyze and interpret complex datasets using state-of-the-art statistical and computational techniques.
3.    Method Development: Innovate and optimize analytical methods for detecting and quantifying exposure biomarkers. Ensure methodological rigor and accuracy in all laboratory procedures.
4.    GC/MS Expertise: Utilize gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) for the identification and quantification of chemical compounds. Maintain and troubleshoot GC/MS equipment to ensure high-quality data production
5.    Collaboration and Leadership: Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams, including epidemiologists, toxicologists, and public health experts. Provide mentorship and guidance to junior researchers and students.
6.    Publication and Dissemination: Prepare high-quality manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals. Present research findings at scientific conferences and stakeholder meetings.
7.    Grant Writing: Contribute to the development of grant proposals to secure funding for ongoing and future firefighter cancer research projects.

Department Specific Qualifications         

Education:
•    Ph.D. in Exposure Science, Analytic Chemistry, Environmental Health, or a related field. (Preferred)

Experience:
•    Demonstrated experience in exposure science and/or analytic chemistry, with a strong track record of relevant research and publications.

Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes:
1.    Proficiency in advanced analytical techniques (e.g., mass spectrometry, chromatography), data analysis software (e.g., R, SAS, Python), and laboratory protocols.
2.    In-depth understanding of occupational exposure assessment, biomonitoring, environmental chemistry, and related fields.
3.    Excellent problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously. Strong written and verbal communication skills.
4.    Commitment to scientific excellence, ethical research practices, and collaborative teamwork. Passion for improving firefighter health and safety.
