Phlebotomist - Washington, D.C 40 Hours/Week; Weekday only | Must have at least 1 year of recent experience Job Description The main function of a phlebotomist is to assist in performing various assigned duties, troubleshooting, training, and making workflow recommendations. Responsibilities + Perform blood draws, label specimens, centrifuge specimens, record maintenance data, and decontaminate equipment. + Update patient information and collect and store specimens according to established procedures. + Explain the process of venipuncture, blood drawing, and other specimen collections (e.g., urine or fecal) clearly and courteously. + Demonstrate techniques using straight needles and/or butterfly needles. + Understand all physicians' orders and match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes. + Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test orders. + Ensure 100% accuracy when checking test requisitions or computer labels against scripts. + Package specimens for transport and store specimen samples at the required temperature in appropriate collection containers/tubes. + Follow specific procedures to maintain the integrity of the specimen during transport. + Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and attend annual department trainings. + Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries. Essential Skills + Valid Phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, as required in some states. + Minimum of 1 year of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting. + Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite. + High School Diploma or GED. + Preferred 2-4 years of experience in phlebotomy, blood draw, venipuncture, and specimen collection. Additional Skills & Qualifications + Customer service skills in a laboratory or medical setting. Work Environment The phlebotomist will be required to perform 20-30 draws daily and stand for 4-6 hours. The role involves working alone and handling patients of all ages. The position requires 2-3 weeks of training at the start, depending on experience. The work schedule is the 1st shift, Monday to Friday, from 8 am to 4:30 pm. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $19.00 - $25.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
