The Phlebotomist is responsible for performing a variety of venipuncture techniques, collects blood specimens from patients in support of laboratory procedures used in the diagnosis and treatment of disease. Accurately orders, collects, transports and processes all specimens for laboratory testing. Retrieves all specimens which are delivered to the laboratory. Other duties include supply stocking, scanning of documents for EMR and clerical duties.

Job Description

This job description is intended to describe the general nature and level of work performed by employees assigned to this department. GENERAL DUTIES

Performance of Venipuncture and Skin Puncture:

Performs venipuncture and skin puncture in accordance with department SOP.

Workload Management:

Adheres to SOP in the use of handheld devices for specimen collection for patient.Monitors collection list and document status of outstanding collections where specimens are not collected.

Specimen Pick Up and Delivery:

Ensures that STAT specimens are delivered to the Lab within 15 minutes of collection or pick up.

Specimen Handling and Receipt:

Ensures that specimens are updated to receive status, correct data is reflected in terms of collect date/time and receipt date/time.Delivers to the appropriate Lab Section immediately upon receipt.

Quality Assurance Related Duties:

Communicates complaints or problems to department supervisor.Collects data for quality assurance program as outlined by department SOP or instruction by department supervisor.Maintains thorough and neat documentation.

Monitoring and Clearing the Not Received report:

Responsible for monitoring and clearing collection pending reports on a continuous basis.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Required: High School Diploma/GED or equivalent OR 2 years of applicable work experience.Phlebotomist Certification will be considered in lieu of minimum qualifications.


LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS

Required: Basic Life Support Health Care Provider (CPR, BLS) - American Heart Association


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of standard phlebotomy techniques and appropriate blood processing and handling procedures.Record keeping skills.Understand and follow specific clinical protocols, ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
