Pheresis Technician

Job Summary: Under general supervision, prepares patient/donor and equipment for transfusion of blood products or pheresis and related special procedures. Operates apheresis equipment under supervision of Registered Nurse; monitors patient/donor condition during procedures and reports aberration to Registered Nurse. Disconnects patient/donor from machines following established procedures. Records relevant data; processes patient chart; enters patient charges. Cleans and maintains related equipment and orders expendable supplies as necessary.

Responsibilities:

Prepares patient and/or donor for pheresis by taking and recording patient's vital signs, obtaining pre-procedure blood samples when necessary and connecting the patient/donor to equipment via peripheral catheter. Operates apheresis equipment under supervision of Registered Nurse; Monitors patient condition during pheresis and/or special procedures by noting patient symptoms, reactions and vital signs. Reports abnormalities to Registered Nurse. Disconnects patient/donor from machine, takes and records vital signs and documents treatment given. Obtains post-procedure blood sample. Process charts and patient charges. Prepares documents to facilitate patient admission. Operates online terminal to enter and retrieve patient information. Maintains unit records and equipment logs. Cleans and maintains pheresis and related equipment according to policy. Prepares equipment necessary for procedures. Orders and stocks expendable supplies used for general maintenance of unit.

Qualifications:
