Assist pharmacist in preparing and distributing medications, maintaining drug inventory and maintenance of records to ensure effective patient care. Works only under the direct supervision of a registered pharmacist.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
1. Procures and distributes drug orders per physician request, pharmacist request or prearranged work assignment according to established policies, procedures and protocols and within specified time frame.
Fills physician’s orders, medication surgical kits, medication carts, and/or medication requisitions and specialty items/bins accurately.Identifies and fills replacement medications on emergency crash carts, OR carts, floor stock, automatic dispensing cabinets (ADC) accurately.Prepares sterile products (including chemotherapy and parenteral nutrition) accurately.Delivers medications and supplies to patient care and ancillary areas accurately and timely.2. Maintains adequate stock of medications and supplies according to established policies, procedures and protocols and within specified time frame:
Rotates stock to ensure use before expiration date.Identifies and replaces outdated and unusable drugs.Restocks medication and IV dispensing areas.Prepackages medications in unit of use containers.Assists in ordering, receiving, unpacking, and storing pharmaceuticals and supplies in appropriate locations.3. Participates in the quality improvement activities of the department:
Completes all assigned medication storage area inspections in a timely manner.Conducts unit inspections as required, quality monitoring, collects data and completes documentation, as assigned.Adheres to infection control protocols.Keeps pharmacy areas clean, neat and well organized. Keeps pharmacy equipment clean.4. Maintains competencies required for current position.
Attends staff meetings.Participates in orientation, education and training programs.Reviews literature and other materials as assignedCompletes all competency/skills assessment requirements annually or as directed.5. Contributes to effective operation of the department:
Delivers cart fill medications, IV’s accurately and at designated times.Enters charges and credits for patient medications accurately.Generates reports, pick lists and labels as required.Answers the telephone, identifying self and department. Directs calls to appropriate personnel.Answers requests at the window and makes STAT deliveries to patient care areas when requested.Organizes and prioritizes work assignments.Maintains logs, records and other required documentation accurately. Files in appropriate locations.Demonstrates good verbal and written communication.Education: Certificate as Pharmacy Technician required.
Certification: Pharmacy Technician (PHA) required.
Additional Experience PreferredOne year pharmacy technician experience preferably in a hospital setting
