Job Overview

We are seeking a Peer Specialist to join our team. In this role, you will emphasize the acquisition, development, and expansion of recovery skills needed to fully engage in recovery. Your interventions will be based on the unique therapeutic relationship between you, the individual served, and their family unit. You will provide peer support services that promote coping strategies for mental health and substance use disorders, while helping individuals strengthen their recovery efforts and build community connections.

Key Responsibilities:

Client Assessment and Treatment Planning:

Assist participants in developing and updating treatment and recovery plans.

Complete regular communication with referral sources and guardians regarding client progress and transition planning.

Participate in staffing meetings to ensure continuity of care and comprehensive treatment planning.

Direct Service Provision:

Document all services provided in accordance with state and CARF standards.

Provide crisis intervention when necessary and ensure client safety and well-being.

Facilitate group education and recovery-focused sessions as scheduled.

Help individuals recognize their resilience and connect with support networks in their community.

Peer Support and Recovery Skills Development:

Share lived experiences to support, encourage, and model recovery behaviors.

Help clients set and achieve individualized recovery goals.

Assist individuals with mental health and/or substance use disorders in making independent choices and taking a proactive role in their treatment.

Promote skills for coping with and managing psychiatric symptoms, while encouraging the use of natural supports.

Collaboration and Reporting:

Work with the multidisciplinary team to ensure the delivery of services is in line with treatment plans.

Assist in scheduling treatment sessions and arranging transportation for clients as needed.

Represent the agency in a professional manner to clients, referral sources, and the community.

Make referrals for medical or other issues that cannot be addressed within the treatment milieu.

Training and Professional Development:

Participate in professional development by obtaining required trainings, including 36 hours every 2 years.

Maintain knowledge of resources and best practices for supporting clients in recovery.

Additional Duties:

Perform other duties as assigned by the Program Director or supervisor.

Education and/or Experience Qualifications:

Required: Self-identify as a current or former client of mental health or substance use services, or self-identify as a person in recovery from these disorders.

Preferred: High school diploma or equivalent.

Missouri Only: Must complete a state-approved training program and pass a standardized certification examination within six months, if applicable.

Additional Qualifications:

Knowledge and Skills:

Basic knowledge of case management and rehabilitation methods for mental health and substance use treatment.

Understanding of common challenges faced by individuals with mental health and/or substance use disorders.

Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to create clear and concise reports.

Proficient in sharing lived experience while maintaining appropriate professional boundaries.

Crisis Management:

Ability to handle crisis situations with professionalism and in line with agency policies.

Understanding of how to access community resources to assist clients.

Employment Requirements:

Successful completion of background check, including criminal record, driving record, and abuse/neglect checks.

Completion of New Hire Orientation and mandatory training (First Aid, CPR, Behavioral Management, etc.).

Certification in First Aid and CPR within the first 3 months of employment.

Completion of Behavioral Management and Crisis Management training within specified timeframes.

Completion of 36 hours of required training every two years, and 40 hours annually thereafter.

Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record.
