Position Description
The Peer Navigator will play a vital role in supporting individuals impacted by opioid use disorders through engagement, outreach, and linkage to services. This position is focused on building trusting relationships with clients, offering emotional support, and guiding individuals through recovery pathways. The Peer Navigator will utilize their lived experience in recovery to provide peer support, assist in navigating social services, and promote harm reduction strategies. The role also involves collaborating with healthcare professionals and community organizations to enhance the continuum of care for individuals with opioid use disorder.
Typical Duties
+ Peer Support and Engagement:
+ Provide non-judgmental, peer-to-peer support to individuals with opioid use disorder (OUD) or those at risk.
+ Share personal recovery experiences to inspire hope and motivation for individuals in the program.
+ Conduct regular outreach and engagement efforts to maintain connections with clients.
+ Navigation of Services:
+ Assist clients in navigating healthcare and social service systems, including referrals to substance use treatment, mental health services, housing assistance, and harm reduction services.
+ Accompany clients to appointments, helping them access needed care and resources.
+ Harm Reduction and Education:
+ Educate clients about harm reduction practices, including overdose prevention (e.g., Narcan distribution and training).
+ Promote safe injection practices and link clients to syringe exchange programs.
+ Crisis Intervention:
+ Provide emotional support and crisis intervention as needed.
+ Coordinate with crisis teams and mental health professionals when more intensive services are required.
+ Collaboration and Documentation:
+ Collaborate with clinical staff, case managers, and other service providers to ensure a comprehensive, client-centered approach.
+ Maintain accurate records of client interactions, services provided, and outcomes, ensuring confidentiality and compliance with organizational policies.
+ Advocacy and Empowerment:
+ Empower clients to advocate for their own health and recovery needs.
+ Serve as a liaison between clients and service providers to reduce barriers to care.
Minimum Qualifications
Any combination of education and experience that would prepare the incumbent to perform the duties of the position at the appropriate level. Employees would typically have a bachelor’s degree.
More specific education, experience or certification requirements may be included in the position announcement as vacancies occur.
Preferred Experience, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
+ Experience working with vulnerable populations, particularly those with substance use disorders.
+ Familiarity with harm reduction strategies and local resources for OUD.
+ Knowledge of opioid crisis-related services and treatment options.
+ Familiarity with trauma-informed care principles.
+ Basic computer literacy for documentation and communication.
+ Some college education in social work, psychology, or related field is preferred but not required.
+ Lived experience in recovery from opioid use disorder or substance use disorder (minimum 2 years of sobriety preferred).
+ Certified Peer Recovery Specialist (CPRS) or ability to obtain certification within six months of hire.
Working Conditions
+ Field-based position with significant travel within the community.
+ Must be able to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, as needed.
+ This role may involve interacting with individuals in various stages of recovery, including active use.
