Title: Pathology Grossing Technologist Job Code: 500291

Reports to: Pathologist/ Pathology Supervisor
Position Summary
Responsible for the gross examination and dissection of pathology biopsy specimens and/or other simple specimens assigned by the pathologist.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities Includes the Following:
1. Understands and adheres to the WPH Performance Standards, Policies and Behaviors.
2. Accurately dictates gross descriptions according to designated protocols and templates. Includes all relevant details in the gross description including color, measurement, number of pieces, shape, weight. Reviews gross description to ensure accuracy and completion.
3. Obtaining and appropriately applying the clinical information to the analysis and interpretation of the biopsy case.
4. Reconciliation of biopsy specimens assures appropriate specimen accessioning; reconciles specimen labeling of containers, blocks, and requisitions, according to procedures.
5. Accessioning Surgical Pathology cases into LIS.
6. Downloads and Prints cassettes for surgical specimens as needed
7. Enter block information (number of blocks per case, number of pieces, etc.) into LIS.
8. Loading tissue cassettes into Tissue Processors.
9. Changing reagents on tissue processor as needed.
10. Perform frozen sections with staining and coverslipping as needed.
11. Performs other technical duties as assigned.
12. Performs all other related duties as assigned.
Education & Experience Requirements
NYSDOH Clinical Laboratory Technologist, or Pathologist Assistant License. Degree in Medical Technology or related science.

ï‚· May be exposed to chemicals necessary to perform required tasks. Any hazardous chemicals the employee may be exposed to are listed in the hospital’s SDS (Safety Data Sheet) data base and may be accessed through the hospital’s Intranet site (Employee Tools/SDS Access). A copy of the SDS data base can also be found at the hospital switchboard, saved on a disc.
