Pathology Assistant

Under the general supervision of the Administrative Director of the Laboratory provides support to the Anatomic Pathology Department by assisting the Pathologists and/or certified Pathologists' Assistant in all the functions of Surgical Pathology.

Performs gross examination of simple and minimally complex specimens including but not limited to gallbladders, appendixes, placentas, GI, and skin specimens. Assists the Pathologist and/or certified Pathologists' Assistant in examination of more complex and post-mortem specimens. Performs some or all of the duties in one or more laboratory sections including but not limited to:  Coordinates with nurses, doctors and support staff in correct receipt, accessioning and preparation of tissue.  Prepares tissue for testing, dispatches specimens to department or referral laboratories, and receives/processes/disseminates requests/specimens/reports/test results as indicated.  Receives/gives testing information.  Prepares and cuts frozen sections.  Responsible for stocking, organizing, and maintaining supplies in the surgical suite. Participates in and assists in several functions of Histology and Cytology.

Required Qualifications:

Associate's Degree or  Coursework/Training: Graduate of a Pathology assistant training program or a recognized mortuary science school. or equivalent education, including sixty units including 6 units each in chemistry and biology.

Preferred Qualifications:

1 year All phases of anatomical Pathology, Cytology and Histology.
