Part-time Lecturer_ Smartphone Cinema: Capturing Your Florence Story
New York University (NYU) Florence is seeking a part-time lecturer for a course called “Smartphone Cinema.” The course is offered by NYU Florence in conjunction with NYU Tisch School of the Arts and will begin in Fall 2025. The course is taught in English. The sessions are a mixture of lecture, discussions, practical exercises, and guest visits and excursions. The class meeting pattern for this 2 credit course will be discussed with qualified applicants during the interview process. There are 15 in-person instructional weeks. In addition to the time required for course preparation, classroom instruction, and assessment, the instructor is required to hold a minimum of one set 60-minute office hour per instruction day, during which the instructor will be available to meet with students. The instructor role includes all preparation, delivery, and grading. Using Florence as a learning tool is an expectation for the course. The course is intellectually challenging in content, and requires rigorous student assessment. Course details The aim of this course is to allow students to conceive, produce, direct and edit a short film (or series of short films culminating in one final project) that explores their experience in Florence using the basic smartphone technology. Students will be introduced to the fundamentals of visual storytelling, history of mobile cinema, pre-production principles, basic filmmaking techniques, and post-production workflows. Through hands-on training and practical exercises, students will be encouraged to explore how technical limitations can augment creative storytelling. Terminal degree (Doctorate, JD, MFA, MPS, MBA) would be a plus factor for qualified candidates. Experience teaching in the US is helpful. Ideal candidates should be excellent teachers and accomplished professionals who can demonstrate an ability to connect theory and practice with young artists with a varying degree of experience with course themes, and encourage student-led inquiry in the classroom.
