Part-Time Lecturer
The Center for English Language and Orientation Programs (CELOP) at Boston University is seeking to hire temporary, part-time lecturers on a rolling basis. This position supports CELOP’s mission by planning and delivering high-quality English language courses in both standard and customized short-term programs. Part-time lecturers are expected to demonstrate professionalism, foster innovation in ESL teaching, and promote global understanding and goodwill.
Responsibilities and Tasks
+ Teach in alignment with the CELOP Mission Statement and in accordance with CELOP Teaching Standards (up to 20 hours/week).
+ Maintain accurate daily student records, including attendance and grades.
+ Develop and organize a comprehensive Blackboard course with detailed daily plans and homework assignments.
+ Plan and lead educational field trips and activities, accompanying students on field trips.
+ Prepare final evaluations documenting student progress and academic performance.
+ Schedule 30 minutes of office hour time weekly for every 5 teaching hours.
+ Collaborate with colleagues teaching the same course, level, or skill to coordinate planning, instruction, and student assessment.
+ Communicate regularly with students about their goals, progress, and plans, and direct them to appropriate CELOP personnel for additional support.
+ Notify students about program meetings, academic policies, and CELOP procedures as requested by administrators and coordinators.
+ Monitor and respond to BU email and Teams communications regularly to ensure effective faculty interaction.
+ Adhere to all administrative policies and procedures.
+ Attend related meetings, such as:
+ Start-Up Meeting
+ Monthly Faculty Meetings (approximately one per month)
+ Post-Classroom Observation Debriefs (if applicable)
+ Professional Development Session (at least one; date TBA)
Required Skills
Qualifications
+ Master’s degree in TESOL or a related field (e.g., M.Ed. with TESOL concentration, Master’s in Applied Linguistics with TESOL focus, or other language education degrees).
+ Minimum three years’ experience teaching in an intensive English program. Experience in a university-based intensive English program is preferred.
Availability
We are seeking instructors who are available to teach in at least one of the following semesters:
+ Spring: January – April
+ Summer: May – August
+ Fall: September – December
