Department Profile - Legal and Compliance/Environment & Social Risk Management (ESRM)
Professionals within Legal and Compliance provide a wide range of services to our business units. They might help to structure a complex and sensitive cross-border transaction; advise on a new product introduction; develop a training program or defuse an investor dispute. They preserve the Firm's invaluable reputation for integrity and protect the Firm from sanctions with policies and procedures that meet regulatory requirements around the world. They also strive to maintain cooperative relationships with governmental policy makers and the regulatory and self-regulatory agencies that govern the Firm's businesses.

The Environmental and Social Risk Management (ESRM) Group, within the Legal and Compliance Division, is responsible for developing and implementing the Firm's approach to environmental and social (E&S) risk management across its private market businesses. ESRM manages the development and implementation of the Firm's Environmental and Social Policy Statement (ESPS) and related due diligence and escalation policies and procedures and provides subject matter expertise on E&S risks generally. ESRM also conducts due diligence on relevant transactions and clients, engages with stakeholders, and monitors emerging E&S risks and developments in partnership with the business units, the Firm's Global Sustainability Office and other relevant control functions.

Successful candidates will have experience in environmental and social issues as well as risk management and financial markets and will have an opportunity to contribute to further developing Morgan Stanley's approach to sustainability and E&S risk management.

Responsibilities include:
- Conducting E&S risk reviews and due diligence for relevant transactions and clients across a range of sectors. Primary responsibility will focus on reviews in the Americas and Europe and the Middle East regions but may support Asia and the Pacific as well.
- Engage with business units on E&S risks, including developing and delivering training.
- Support engagements with external stakeholders (NGOs, shareholders, etc.) on E&S risks and issues.
- Provide project management support and collaboration on firm sustainability-related initiatives and committees.
- Advise on further development of the ESPS, E&S risk policies and procedures as well monitor best practices and emerging risk areas.
- Track and advise on relevant regulatory developments.
- Assist with responding to regulatory and stakeholder inquiries related to E&S matters. Qualifications - External
- Knowledge of environmental and social / human rights topics, including relevant international standards, as they may impact financial institutions
- 5-10+ years of relevant professional experience in ESG/sustainability, environmental sustainability, climate, human rights, or similar field
- Law, sustainability, public policy, economics, business, environmental science or other relevant degree preferred
- Project management and execution skills
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including ability to synthesize information into concise reports and communications and engage with external parties
- Ability to work independently as well as within a global team and take initiative to contribute to team success
- Strong attention to detail

Expected base pay rates for the role will be between $110,000.00 and 190,000.00 per year at the commencement of employment. However, base pay if hired will be determined on an individualized basis and is only part of the total compensation package, which, depending on the position, may also include commission earnings, incentive compensation, discretionary bonuses, other short and long-term incentive packages, and other Morgan Stanley sponsored benefit programs.
