The Peterborough peaking facilities, located in Peterborough, UK, comprise two key power installations. The first facility features a simple cycle peaking 2-unit combustion turbine GE Frame 9E, while the second comprises a reciprocating peaking facility equipped with 5 Wärtsilä 34SG units. Opportunity Summary
The Operations & Maintenance (O&M) Technician is responsible for ensuring that plant operations are efficient and deliver optimal asset availability while complying with current UK safety and environmental standards. During plant operations, the O&M Technician will monitor and respond appropriately to any plant or equipment alarms, defects, or failures.
The role involves utilising the Computerised Maintenance Management System (CMMS) to report defects and plan routine or corrective maintenance, ensuring that all work activities are coordinated within safe systems of work. The O&M Technician is also responsible for the site's day-to-day activities, including planning and coordinating contractors performing maintenance activities or plant overhauls, ensuring they adhere to the highest safety and compliance standards.
Additionally, occasional travel to support other locations within the asset portfolio may be required to ensure the delivery of business objectives.
Primary Functions
Continuously oversee plant operations to ensure efficient performance and optimal asset availability. Respond promptly to plant or equipment alarms, defects, and failures, assessing each situation and implementing appropriate corrective measures. Utilise the CMMS to report faults, record work requests, plan and schedule activities, support inventory management, and raise purchase requisitions. Adhere to UK safety and environmental compliance standards in all operational and maintenance activities. Plan and supervise the work of third-party contractors involved in maintenance activities or plant overhauls, ensuring strict adherence to safety and compliance standards. Monitor all equipment before, during, and after operation to guarantee safe and efficient functioning in line with environmental regulations. Execute planned and corrective maintenance on all equipment and systems to ensure optimal functionality. Work within established safe systems and follow Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures during maintenance and operational tasks. Collaborate effectively with team members and other departments to foster a cooperative work environment. Maintain or enhance site housekeeping practices to ensure a clean and safe workplace. Working Relationships
The O&M Technician reports to the Mechanical Maintenance Manager and may receive general direction from the Field Manager or General Manager as required. The role also involves effective collaboration with the field planner and colleagues.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
This position will work in both a power plant and office environment. Physical requirements include the possibility of standing for extended periods, stair and ladder climbing, routinely lifting up to 20 kg, and, when necessary, using a respirator.
Protective equipment must be worn for certain tasks (e.g., hard hats, safety glasses, air masks, ear protection, chemical suits, gloves, and high-voltage protective equipment, etc.). Working with hazardous materials may be required. There are extensive smoking restrictions in and around the facility.
Fitness for Duty
All employees will participate in the Fitness for Duty Program. This program includes a post-offer physical examination and drug screening and post-employment random drug screening.
Work Schedule
The regular working hours are Monday to Friday, 7:00 am to 3:00 pm. This role also requires flexibility for extended hours and varied shifts, including potential weekend and bank holiday work, depending on schedules, workload, and plant conditions. Periodic ‘on-call’ availability will be required.
Compensation
Initial starting compensation will range from £47,000 to £53,000 dependent on experience.
Job Qualifications
A relevant technical qualification, such as an NVQ, ONC, or HNC in an engineering discipline. Previous experience in mechanical maintenance and/or operations within a heavy process environment (ideally power generation). Previous experience operating and maintaining equipment specific to power generation, such as turbines, boilers, and electrical systems, is essential. Previous experience with CMMS systems for work planning is desirable. Experience in managing third-party contractors or vendor service providers is beneficial. Previous working knowledge of health, safety, and environmental legislation and regulations is desirable. Practical experience with industry safety rules or lockout systems would be beneficial. Must be highly organised and possess excellent oral and written communication skills. Ability to work well with others while being self-directed. Proficient in using Microsoft Office applications, such as Word, Excel, and Outlook. Must possess a valid and unrestricted driving licence, ensuring it remains in good standing at all times.The role includes:
