Offensive Security Researcher
Intel
**Job Description**
Initiates the secure design, development, execution, and implementation of scientific research projects to fuel growth in secure computing, communication, memory, networking, intellectual property, and new business opportunities. Applies scientific research principles and concepts to potential inventions and products to define and architect secure design, development, and operation of Intel's hardware and software products and services. Leads complex, multidisciplinary security research projects with expertise in exploring vulnerabilities and implements complex multistage exploits on hardware platforms and architectures. Serves as subject matter expert in vulnerability discovery, analysis, and exploitation. Studies emerging threat landscape in hacker community to prioritize offensive security research focus. Focuses on robust counter measures and provides mitigation guidance and strategies. Explores and invents hardware techniques as a method of attack against targets, commanding deep pervasive pulse on business and technologies. Scouts the threat landscape of low-level microcode, pursuing opportunities when discovered to build our hacking capability. Builds new adversary tools, techniques, or methodologies for automation research and lower level systems, accommodating partner teams with reasonable expectations and timeframes. Maintains substantial knowledge of state-of-the-art security principles, theories, and emerging threat landscapes and contributes to literatures and conferences. Exhibits passion for security research and community impact demonstrated by published research and collaboration to community efforts.
Researchres technological trends, enables partnerships and collaboration among industry, academia, standards bodies, product, and other technical groups to address important technology and customer issues, and finds innovative solutions to difficult problems for midterm or long-term time frames. Influences external research, disseminates results, and raises the profile of conducted research through scientific publications, patents, talks, and Intel internal or external outreach efforts. Performs research to define boundaries and create proofofconcepts or prototype new ideas including test chips and competitive analysis versus industry trends. Recommends features and influences future Intel product roadmap.
**Qualifications**
**Minimum work experience requirements:**
-3+ years of experience (or equivalent hands-on work through academic studies, side-projects, hobbies, class projects, etc.) in research, preferably system security research or adjacent fields, and exploring techniques from the fields of physical, hardware, software, or a combination of them as a method of attack vectors against targets within computing systems.
**Preferred qualifications:**
- In-depth experience with applied security research
- System view and ability to understand hardware flows and the interrelations between hardware blocks involved in them.
- Ability for defining and building complex hardware setups in lab environment, including in-depth understanding of basic HW lab equipment operation (scopes, etc.) and the implications of advanced equipment configurations on measurements.
- Basic knowledge of fault isolation/fault analysis techniques (contact and contactless probing, optical and e-beam based device alteration, and so on), and their implications on physical security.
- Demonstrated expertise in exploit development (published exploits and write-ups on exploiting new classes of issues, new techniques, tools are greatly appreciated)
- Reverse Engineering experience (or, for researchers focused on open-source software, demonstrated expertise on reading assembly and writing exploits for complex vulnerability classes, Hardware reverse engineering)
- Knowledge of computer hardware, architecture, CPU, SoC, chipsets, BIOS, Firmware, Drivers, and other compute paradigms
- Curiosity and eagerness for continued learning
- Knowledge in ML/AI for security is advantage
**The ideal candidate should also have:**
- Ability to work both autonomously and as part of a small team in a less structured start-up type environment with minimal supervision
- Ability to span security expertise over HW, SW, Firmware and Services domains
- Innovative thinking, demonstrated by patents or past publications
- Passion for security research and community impact, demonstrated by collaboration with community efforts
