The role of the Odyssey Product Owner in Agile development is multifaceted, requiring a balance of strategic vision, stakeholder management, and close collaboration with the development team. The primary goal is to deliver a valuable product that meets user needs, maintaining a sustainable pace of development and continuous improvement.

What you'll do…

Product Vision and Stakeholder Engagement

Define Product Vision: Clearly articulate the product vision, understanding why the product is being built, the problem it aims to solve, and the target users.Stakeholder Communication: Maintain constant communication with stakeholders to gather their needs and ensure their requirements align with the product vision.User Story Creation: Convert stakeholder needs and ideas into concrete user stories that describe features and functionalities.

Prioritization and Backlog Management

Prioritize User Stories: Decide the priority of user stories based on their value and size, ensuring the most critical and valuable features are built first.Manage Product Backlog: Continuously groom and maintain the product backlog, ensuring it contains a well-defined list of features and requirements.Say No When Necessary: Make tough decisions about what not to build to prevent the team from being overloaded and to maintain focus on the most important tasks.

Collaboration and Team Support

Collaborate with Development Team: Work closely with a self-organizing, cross-functional development team to ensure they understand the product vision and requirements.Facilitate Backlog Grooming Workshops: Conduct regular backlog grooming sessions with the development team and stakeholders to refine user stories, estimate their size, and write acceptance criteria.Support Continuous Delivery: Ensure that stories are broken down into small, manageable pieces that can be delivered frequently, supporting the team’s capacity.


 

Value and Size Estimation

Estimate Value and Size: Engage with stakeholders and the development team to make relative guesses about the value and size of user stories, helping to prioritize them effectively.Balance Knowledge and Customer Value: Make trade-offs between knowledge acquisition (reducing uncertainty) and delivering customer value, focusing on different types of value at different stages of the project.

Feedback and Continuous Improvement

Short Feedback Loops: Ensure frequent deliveries to real users to gather feedback and learn from it, continuously improving the product.Support Automated Testing: Advocate for and support the team's investment in automated testing and continuous integration to maintain a sustainable pace and high-quality output.

Expectations Management

Manage Expectations: Use real data to provide stakeholders with realistic forecasts and manage their expectations honestly.Forecasting and Communication: Regularly update forecasts based on team velocity and communicate progress and potential risks to stakeholders.

Large Projects and Multiple Teams

Coordinate with Other Product Owners: In larger projects with multiple teams, ensure synchronization with other Product Owners to manage dependencies and avoid sub-optimization.Chief Product Owner Role: In scenarios with multiple product backlogs, a Chief Product Owner may be needed to keep all Product Owners aligned and maintain overall product coherence.
