Summary: 

The Nurse Educator (NE), utilizing innovative and flexible solutions (including leveraging information technology and simulation to enhance and streamline education), evidence based practice, and effective operations, is responsible for establishing an enfironment that transforms professional growth, role competence and proficiency in their specialty.   The NE facilitates the achievement of professional/clinical outcomes with all assigned staff and/or patient populations.

The NE reports directly to their Department Manager, and collaborates with the clinical managers and other education/quality practitioners and leaders in defining goals which support major short and long-term  divisional and organizational initiatives. Through this collaboration, the NE supports the implementation of the BH model of patient care.  In collaboration with clinical managers and quality leaders, the NE is responsible for ensuring excellence in patient safety and quality, creating a culture of safety, and leading the development of staff competence and nursing professional practice.  He/she enhances the quality of nursing practice and patient care by functioning as a consultant, QI/PI/research leader, and educator throughout the Division of Nursing.  The NE leverages the ANPD model of Nursing Professional Development and encourages the advancement of clinical nursing practice and professional development through review, critique, and dissemination of relevant current literature, research findings, and professional standards.

In collaboration with Leadership, the NE is responsible for participation in the interview and selection of staff within their assigned unit or patient populations.  For the first 6 months to 1 year, based on advancement with competencies, all staff newly hired with have a dotted line reporting relationship with the NE for their area and a direct line reporting relationship with the Unit Manager.  This will facilitate continuous performance feedback for new hires during the initial orientation phase and pivotal first year of employment at BMC and will ensure successful professional enculturation and specialty nursing advancement and performance. 

Job Responsibilities: 

1) Demonstrated knowledge of developmental stages for the all age groups, and applies developmental theories and concepts when planning and implementing education for patients, families, and staff.

2) ESTABLISHES AND/OR CONTRIBUTES TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF ANNUAL DEPARTMENTAL GOALS AND OBJECTIVES AND TO THEIR ONGOING EVALUATION.

Develops individual goals and objectives that are reflective of departmental, divisional and organizational goals and objectives and to their ongoing evaluation.  Provides leadership and direction to staff in the achievement of special project goals and objectives as noted by periodic and annual review.

3) DEMONSTRATES CLINICAL EXPERTISE BY UTILIZING THE NURSING PROCESS IN THE PROVISION OF AN ADVANCED LEVEL OF DIRECT OR INDIRECT CARE TO A SELECT PATIENT POPULATION

Functions as a consultant to all members of the health care team in his/her area of expertise in professional practice, education, and improvement.  Develops clinical resources and guidelines for patients and their families based on personal observations, staff input, research and/or QA findings as indicated by personal log and/or review of materials.  Models the professional practice of nursing by providing direct or indirect patient care, as assigned, to a selected patient population as evidenced by direct observation, personal log, documentation, and/or participation in patient care conferences.  Provides ongoing educational and emotional support to nursing staff in clinical decision-making and problem-solving.

4)  IDENTIFIES EDUCATION AND PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE NEEDS OF NURSING PERSONNEL AND UTILIZES A VARIETY OF RESOURCES TO MEET THESE NEEDS.

Utilizes theories and principles of learning and nursing science to foster the attainment of knowledge and skills by nursing staff, as evidenced by program and/or evaluation materials.  Collaborates with nursing administration, nursing management, and nursing personnel to identify and meet the professional development needs of staff as evidenced by personal log.  Facilitates the development of staff to provide professional educational offerings as evidenced by personal log, program material and staff feedback.  Participates in educational activities upon request as evidenced by personal log and program materials.

5)  DEMONSTRATES A COMMITMENT TO NURSING INNOVATION AND IMPROVEMENT.

Assists nursing staff with the interpretation and communication of pertinent research and QA findings as documented through meetings and/or personal log.  Assists nursing staff to incorporate research and QA findings to support change in clinical practice as evidenced by personal log and clinical practice documents.  Conducts, facilitates, and/or participates as appropriate in studies as evidenced by proposal review, sponsorship, data collection, personal log and other related material.  Collaborates with nursing staff, QA Committee, colleagues, and peers to identify and promote areas for nursing research as evidenced by personal records and related materials.  Fosters nursing research through participation in the BMC Nursing Research Committee as evidenced by attendance as assigned, timely review of nursing research proposals and active support of committee sponsored events or activities.

6)  FUNCTIONS AS A CONSULTANT IN AREA OF CLINIC EXPERTISE/PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE WITHIN THE DIVISION OF NURSING, BMC AND/OR THE COMMUNITY.

Provides nursing consultation to members of the health care team to enhance patient care records, staff feedback and personal log.  Engages in ongoing communication with the staff for the purpose of addressing patient care problems as evidenced by involvement in patient care rounds, observation, staff feedback and personal log. Acts as a clinical resource to faculty and students of selected institutions via established contact mechanisms as evidenced by personal log and related materials.

7)  SERVES AS A LEADER, INITIATOR, AND FACILITATOR IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF PROGRAMS AND ACTIVITIES WHICH ENHANCES THE QUALITY OF PATIENT CARE.

Collaborates with multidisciplinary teams to define strategies for educational initiatives related to quality improvement. Participates with staff to identify the need for change in the delivery of patient care as demonstrated by personal log and related material.  Utilizes theory when developing, implementing and/or evaluating projects as evidenced by personal log and related materials.  Demonstrates leadership in the facilitation of staff efforts to create change as evidenced by personal log and related materials.

8) MAINTAINS A HIGH STANDARD OF PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE.

Attends relevant educational offerings, each year to expand practice related knowledge as documented by personal log and related documents.  Collaborates with peers to broaden one’s scope of professional nursing as evidenced by involvement in a professional organization and/or personal log.  Engages in activities that contribute to the profession of nursing and enhance the image of BMC as evidenced by personal log and related materials.

9)  Demonstrates competency for one-to-one observation of patient based on department and unit specific needs.

Required Work Experience: 

1) At least three years of clinical experience and three years in specialty (may be concurrent)

Preferred Work Experience: 

1) Project Management experience preferred; Prior teaching experience; Prior experience within a teaching hospital
