The Registered Nurse Clinician (Nurse Clinician) in collaboration with Physicians, unit-based RN’s and other health care workers, provides holistic, compassionate care to customers and families. Practices under the direction of the supervising physician and based on physician approved protocols. Provides leadership by serving as a clinical expert, educator, and liaison between the customer population and the medical, nursing, and interdisciplinary staff who care for them. The focus is on independent, collaborative, and medically delegated nursing functions as described in standards and competencies specific to the area served and based on the RN scope of practice. Executes the Standards of Nursing Practice including: assessment; nursing diagnosis; outcome identification; planning; implementation; and evaluation. The customer focus may include populations at different stages in the life cycle, such as the care of neonates, infants, children, young adults, adults, and older adults and is dependent on the physician’s area of practice. The Nurse Clinician collaborates with the staff and contributes to the customer’s plan of care.
Cardiovascular Surgery Nurse Clinician - Coordinates the cardiac/thoracic/vascular surgical customer’s treatment through all phases of initial care to rehabilitation ensuring quality customer care is delivered through a managed care approach. Follows approved protocols during the preoperative, intra-operative, postoperative and post discharge phases of the customer experience. The intra-operative phase of this practice includes the role of Surgical First Assist and vein harvesting procedures.
Trauma Nurse Clinician - Coordinates the treatment for Trauma Service and Neurosurgical Service customers during the initial acute phase of care to rehabilitation ensuring quality care is delivered through a managed care approach. Trauma Neuro Nurse Clinicians serve as care managers and include all necessary disciplines to assure the trauma/neuro customer population receives the immediate and ongoing health care support necessary.
Partial Hospital Program Nurse Clinician: Customer population is adults of varying ages. Part of the team of care providers. The staff collectively provides cognitive/behavioral therapy with some DBT skill-building in an outpatient setting to customers who need help to stabilize post-hospitalization and/or prevent the need for hospitalization. There is a psycho-educational component to the program as well as the inclusion of complementary mind-body focused programming. Each member of the team has extensive knowledge of stabilizing and creating aftercare plans on an outpatient basis.
Orthopedic Nurse Clinician - Coordinates the treatment for Orthopedic Service customers during the initial acute phase of care to rehabilitation ensuring quality care through a managed care approach. Orthopedic Nurse Clinicians serve as care managers and include all necessary disciplines to assure immediate and ongoing orthopedic health care needs are met. Assess, apply, remove and modify casts, splints and other orthopedic devises as directed by orthopedic surgeons.
Oncology/Hematology Nurse Clinician - Responsible for accurate assessment, education, coordination of care, and delivery of treatment for oncology and hematology customers based on approved protocols. Protocols consist of chemotherapy and other medications and may include but are not limited to: intravenous, intra-muscular, subcutaneous, and oral therapies.
Plastic Surgery Nurse Clinician - Coordinates the treatment for Plastic Surgery Service customers during the initial acute phase of care to rehabilitation ensuring quality care through a managed care approach. Plastic Surgery Nurse Clinicians serve as care managers and include all necessary disciplines to assure immediate and ongoing plastic surgery health care needs are met. Assess wounds, apply and remove dressings and splints as directed by plastic surgeons.
Requirements
Education
• Associate's degree in nursing plus two years of nursing experience or Bachelor's degree in nursing required. Master's or higher in nursing desirable. Candidates will be considered provided the degree will be completed within a time frame negotiated within the job offer. Candidates with a degree in other related health care fields may be considered dependent on background and experience in previous roles.

• Previous experience in a clinician role desirable
• In addition to education requirements, minimum of 3 – 5 years of experience in customer care relevant to the clinician position being considered.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
• Demonstrated leadership, verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills
• Ability to balance priorities in a rapidly changing health care environment
• Commitment to active participation in the continuous improvement of nursing practice for the customer population supported
• Certification as required for the specialty or customer population supported
Licensure/Certification
• Current licensure as RN in State of Minnesota State Requirement
• Current Certified Registered Nurse First Assist (CRNFA) certification - applicable ONLY for the Cardiovascular Surgery unit NMHC Standard
