What Nuclear Pharmacy contributes to Cardinal Health

Nuclear Pharmacy is responsible for providing radiopharmaceuticals and other drugs to medical care providers under highly regulated State and Federal guidelines may also consult with or advise physicians and nuclear medicine technologists on the safe and efficacious use of radioactive drugs for diagnosis and therapy

Responsibilities

Under the immediate direction of a qualified licensed Pharmacist on a one-to-one ratio, the Nuclear Pharmacy Technician Trainee is being trained to:

Learn how to use the Order Receipt and Order Entry systems by becoming familiar with customers, locations, drug names and dosages and customer dose specifications. Know the BOP (Board of Pharmacy) state laws and requirements for radioactive order or prescription.  Learn how to identify failure modes.Under the direction of a Pharmacist, be able to elute generators and become proficient with dose calibrator, Moly-99 Assay, related calculations, and concentrations. Learn how to identify failure modes.Under the direction of a Pharmacist, be able to dispense prescriptions and compound by becoming proficient with vial set up, IV Hood USP 797 (United States Pharmacopeia) preparation, radioactive survey and decontamination, dose calibrator and GM (Geiger-Mueller) survey meter. Demonstrate ability to compound top 5 radioactive drugs and know the ALARA (As Low As Reasonably Achievable) compliant technique. Demonstrate efficiency by being able to dispense a dose in under 90 seconds. Learn how to identify failure modes.Become familiar with the quality control process by becoming proficient with TOP 10 radioactive quality control test and set up and with the data entry system and MCA (Multi-channel analyzer)/SCA(single channel analyzer). Learn how to identify failure modes.Demonstrate compliance with the Dose Wrapping and DOT Packing procedures by understanding the DOT (Department of Transportation), BOP (Board of Pharmacy) and NRC (Nuclear Regulatory Commission) regulations and paperwork, Become proficient with the GM (Geiger-Mueller) Survey Meter and with MCA (Multi-channel analyzer)/SCA (single channel analyzer).  Learn how to identify failure modes.Understand the radioactive waste return and decay process by demonstrating an understanding of the decay process and the processing of medical waste. Learn how to identify failure modes.Know the inventory and regulatory programs by knowing how to handle the incoming and outgoing check-in and packaging. Handle the stock room maintenance and 5S methodology visuals.Become familiar with the Voice of the Customer/ Voice of the Business /Continuous Improvement/Leadership Essentials by completing a one day shadowing at a customer site and a one day ride-a-long with a sales consultant. Collect and enter Customer Impact Data daily. Do a monthly review of the Pharmacy Scorecard with the manager. Review the Leadership Essentials, complete the White Belt Training in Operational Excellence.Perform other job related duties as required to ensure the goals and objectives of the department are met including delivering doses if necessary.

Qualifications

High School diploma, equivalent work experience preferred, college education a plusRegistration with the State Board of Pharmacy, licensure as a Pharmacy Technician/certification may be required in the state in which the pharmacy is locatedPast experience as a Pharmacy Technician a plusAbility to hear, write, and speak clearly in order to communicate with customers and health care professionals.Strong customer service skillsManual dexterity required for occasional reach, lifting and holding of small objects.Demonstrated manual dexterity in order to dispense doses.Ability to lift containers weighing up to 75 pounds.Must hold a valid driver's license in the state in which the pharmacy is locatedComfortable driving in all types of weather conditions (rain, sleet, snow, fog, wind and sun) as needed.  Deliveries occur during both nighttime and daytime conditions.  Ability to become enrolled into the Cardinal Health Nuclear Pharmacy Services Nuclear Pharmacy Technician program.Flexibility to work various shifts or overtime as needed.Intermediate computer skills (ability to use computers and tablets).Ability to work weekends or be in a weekend rotation.Ability to work on call or be in an on call rotation.Ability to work holidays or be in a holiday rotation.
