NPD Design Engineer

The role of the Design Engineer for the New Product Development team will be to design and develop small ordnance devices such as start cartridges, linear ordnance lines, and other pyrotechnic components.  Other duties include:

Conduct detailed analysis and simulations to ensure device performance and reliability under various conditions. Create and maintain detailed design documentation, including CAD models, technical drawings, and specifications. Perform testing and validation of designs through prototyping and experimental procedures. Collaborate with manufacturing teams to optimize designs for production and ensure seamless transition from development to manufacturing. Conduct failure analysis and implement design improvements to enhance product reliability and performance. Ensure compliance with industry standards, safety regulations, and customer requirements. Participate in project planning, scheduling, and reporting to ensure timely and successful project completion. Provide input as the technical point of contact in completing assigned engineering-related efforts for new product development projects as it pertains to design creation, documentation, and manufacturing and test support, to include engineering analysis, product design, drawing preparation, input to factory unit cost estimation, and product planning, as well as support of business development (marketing) activities. Resolve issues related to production launch for new products. Actively provides support to product manufacturing efforts including such tasks as: mechanical prototyping, generation and maintenance of technical design data and documentation, non-conforming material disposition, pre-production performance tailoring and active engagement with the Integrated Product Team (IPT) to resolve issues related to production manufacturing processes, inspection processes, testing setup and testing processes. Supports activities to generate required technical inputs for proposals including but not limited to, Technical Volume, data deliverable definitions, engineering cost estimates and other technical support to Program Management, Applications Engineering and Business Development. Actively participates in Sale Order Kick Off (SOKO) meetings. Completes a thorough review of proposed vs. contracted design engineering requirements necessary to complete the job prior to the scheduled SOKO meeting. Completes work to close any requirement gaps identified at the SOKO meeting prior to the work order release of the job to the production floor. Active involvement in providing feedback for Sales Order Close Out (SOCO) meetings. Document technical lessons learned throughout the life of the contract, e.g. production inspection and test issues, individual failure investigation action, recommendations for design improvements e.g. improved material, easier to manufacture, material obsolescence, etc. Items identified in these meetings will be incorporated into action items on or before award of the next contract. Lessons learned should drive corrections or improvements for any future contracts. Participate in problem solving team activities related to anomalies that manifest during production and testing as well as customer complaints or field returns. Provide requested support of continuous improvement activities.

Qualifications:

Working knowledge of DOE, DFMEA, FMEA, Failure Analysis, Trade Studies or similar tools preferred. Working knowledge of engineering drawings, GD&T, tolerance analysis, lean practices, and associated business tools. Ability to apply strong engineering fundamentals to perform analysis and design Working knowledge SolidWorks or similar solid modeling software. Working knowledge of fundamental engineering analysis capability; finite element analysis, e.g., SolidWorks Simulation and/or ANSYS a plus. Proficient in MS Office applications, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Working knowledge of Access, Visio, and Project a plus. Possess professional oral and written communication of technical knowledge in a clear and understandable manner. Interpersonal skills promoting effective interaction with other staff, customers, and suppliers. Able to complete necessary research to leverage information outside of PSEMC to drive solutions and/or create new ideas in support of factory goals and strategic initiatives. Possesses the ability to leverage prescribed business systems, driving actions to resolve an issue or improve a process Demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional problem-solving teams driving effective and timely solutions.

Education and Experience:

BS degree in Engineering or related technical discipline from accredited program 5+ years previous work experience in relevant field preferred.
