Description of Job
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES
• Provides leadership to and management of the education programs within the school, consistent with school policies and procedures;
• Responsibility for making determinations related to all positions within the school, including responsibility for hiring and performance evaluation;
• Fiscal responsibility for the funds allocated to all programs under their direction; and,
• Responsibility for staying abreast of current educational trends and developments in instruction, curriculum, assessment, technology and discipline as it relates to the education of students with visual impairments.
JOB FUNCTIONS
• Provide leadership to service providers in the implementation of best practices for an educational program for students who are blind/visually impaired.
• Develop and interpret objectives of the program for students, staff, parents and the community.
• Participate in the school accountability process to include the determination of accreditation indicators, design and implementation of curriculum, design of instruction, and participation on the school accountability committee.
• Ensure appropriate assessments are administered and analyzed within the program, monitor and ensure student progress and performance within the program, and facilitate student intervention team meetings as needed.
• Administer the scheduling of students in accordance with the Individualized Educational Program (IEP), to fully utilize the special skills and abilities of staff for the benefit of the students' education.
• Be knowledgeable of and participate as appropriate in the development and review of student IEPs.
• Develop and provide opportunities for families to engage in activities which support their understanding of and growth of their children.
• Provide direction, guidance and support to students to maintain a positive, safe and orderly school climate, consistent with school policies and procedures related to student discipline and incident reporting.
• Recruit, select, assign, supervise, evaluate, coordinate and recommend termination as necessary the work of assigned staff, including teachers, paraprofessionals, volunteers and other support staff consistent with school policies and procedures.
• Support staff related to the achievement of individual performance goals and objectives, to include documentation of observations and data performance meetings.
• Ensure appropriate daily learning environment coverage to include scheduling and supervision of substitute teachers / paraprofessionals.
• Determine needs and make recommendations concerning the acquisition of curriculum, resources, technology, supplies, equipment and specially designed aids necessary to support the needs of students who are blind/visual impaired.
• Direct and coordinate working relationships among instructional, related service and other support staff. Work directly with other program administrators to promote the achievement of schoolwide goals.
• Lead effectively in providing educational programs of excellence, guiding school reform efforts, and achievement of strategic plan goals. • Coordinate with Facilities staff to ensure the care and safekeeping of school buildings, grounds and all equipment therein.
• Positively serve as a leader / team member in the School for the Blind and of the Colorado School for the Deaf and the Blind (CSDB) as a whole, facilitate regular scheduled department / team meetings, Professional Learning Community meetings, and participate in school and instructional meetings as required.
• Assist as requested to coordinate and maintain student records; supervise and review the preparation of student reports.
• Coordinate and maintain necessary records related to all federal and special projects assigned.
• Maintain professional competence and growth through participation in educational / professional development activities and through organizational memberships, publications, conferences, courses, etc., design and implement professional development activities for staff.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights
QUALIFICATIONS
• Master's degree in Education or related field from a regionally accredited college or university; Master’s degree in Education for the Visually Impaired preferred.
• Must hold, or be eligible for, appropriate educator licensure in the State of Colorado endorsed as a Special Education Specialist: Visually Impaired, or comparable endorsement.
• Must hold or be eligible for appropriate educator licensure in the State of Colorado as a Professional Principal.
• Five (5) years successful experience as a teacher, administrator or similar position (preferred in the field of Vision Education); three (3) years of administrative and/or supervisory experience preferred.
• Ability to demonstrate competency in Braille by the end of the first instructional year as evidenced by possession of a CDE Certification of Braille Competency.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES
• Knowledge of and ability to apply current trends in education and promising practices in the education of students who are blind/visually impaired.
• Knowledge of instructional strategies and practices necessary to promote high levels of achievement in the area of academics and daily living skills.
• Knowledge of appropriate and formative assessments and the ability to analyze the data gathered to inform decision-making.
• Knowledge of and ability to effectively adapt and apply teaching skills, and lesson preparation to a technology-rich environment, which may include but is not limited to on-site learning environments, telepresence, and multiple distance education technologies and delivery modes; ability to effectively model the implementation of technology relative to instruction.
• Knowledge of and ability to assess and apply technology to perform the requirements of the position; ability to effectively utilize a variety of computer software applications, which may include but is not limited to e-mail, Internet, word processing, electronic calendar, presentation development, spreadsheet, database, etc.; willingness to stay current and develop skills as needed with or without direct support from CSDB.
• Knowledge of current trends and use of technology specific to individuals who are blind/visually impaired.
• Knowledge of federal and state statutes and laws concerning educational programming, particularly as they apply to persons with disabilities.
• Knowledge of and ability to provide leadership to an educational program that is interdisciplinary in nature, emphasizes hands-on experiential learning and addresses the academic, social, emotional and physical needs of children who are visually impaired.
• Ability to develop a strong working relationship and a shared vision of the future with staff members, school personnel, parents, students and alumni by fostering a climate of trust/harmony and effectively involving others in planning and decision-making.
• Ability to communicate effectively with all students. • Strong written English skills.
• Ability to respond effectively and positively to feedback.
• Ability to participate collaboratively and effectively in team setting.
• Strong interpersonal skills.
• Proficiency/ commitment to work toward proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) at the Novice (0+) skill level, as demonstrated through an appropriate assessment tool and according to school policy/procedure. • Knowledge of the Expanded Core Curriculum for students with visual impairments, including those with multiple disabilities.
ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS
Reports to and is evaluated by the Director of Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
• Full-time; scheduled to work the standard number of days in the academic year (as per established School Calendar, currently 210 days, August – June).
• Annual base salary shall be established pursuant to the Principal Salary Schedule and based upon appropriate experience.
• Employment is At-Will, with no actual, expressed or implied contract.
WORKING CONDITIONS / PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The work is performed in a typical school environment and involves mostly sedentary to light physical activity, typically requiring exertion of up to 20 lbs. of force occasionally and usually requires walking or standing to a significant degree. Typically, workers are required to climb stairs, bend, reach, and handle objects, and use fingers to operate computer and/or typewriter keyboard. Work requires expression or exchange of ideas and the ability to receive detailed information. Work requires ability to compare, compile, analyze, and coordinate data/ information; ability to instruct/train others; and ability to utilize effective interpersonal skills/ behaviors.
