Location: Northwood, OH
A. Duties
Under directive supervision, assists employees of higher classification, makes splices in, installs terminals on, and performs other work in connection with energized cables of primary voltages; under directive or general directive supervision does such work on cables which may be energized at secondary voltages or de-energized cables of operating potentials at any voltage; carries through assignment, at times with the assistance of other employees; performs duties such as:
1. Making all types of splices and installing terminals on energized cables of operating potentials of primary voltage; performs such work on secondary cables that may be energized;
2. Forming and racking cables in manholes; cutting and fitting cables and connecting and wiping terminals to equipment;
3.Constructing and installing bonding;
4.Making splices in aerial cables;
5. Applying insulation and shielding tape; installing stops and binding cables;
6. Inspecting and testing safety equipment and seeing that it is properly used;
7. Assisting in tagging out circuits and equipment; installing and removing grounds and taking all necessary safety precautions;
8. Assisting in testing for identifications; checking for phase, polarity and continuity; meggering cable;
9. Assisting in performing switching operations in vaults and substations for the transfer of load paralleling or separating cables, as required;
10. Reporting abnormal conditions that develop during progress of the work;
11. Performing other work, as assigned.

B. Qualifications
Must meet the Company’s requirements as to General Qualifications of employment and have a two-year academic degree from the Power Systems Institute Substation program or have equivalent knowledge and work experience as determined by the Company, and in addition:
1. Must have the aptitude of a skilled Electrician and be able to demonstrate this ability and successfully complete the job skills demonstration program where applicable.
2. Must have acquired the practical knowledge of basic courses in electricity, including methods of electrical measurement equivalent;
3. Must know the practices and procedures for making splices in the various types and sizes of cable as required by the duties in an underground network;
4. Must have acquired a thorough working knowledge of:
a. the functions and operation of the equipment, apparatus and circuits used in the Company’s underground system;
b. the maintenance, repair and construction procedures and practices of the department; and
c. the proper use of safety equipment and devices, including the proper care, field inspection and maintenance of such equipment.
5. Must have acquired a working knowledge of:
a. the theory and practices of cable splicing;
b. the mechanical and dielectric characteristics and properties of the materials used in making cables and cable joins; and
c. the functions and operation of testing and other special apparatus required in the work.
6. Must be able to identify the various sizes and types of cable in the Company’s underground system;
7. Must be able to work from complex drawings and circuit diagram;
8. Must have a thorough understanding of the operation of circuits, their connections and interconnections;
9. Must be able to make clear, concise and accurate reports, as required by the work;
10. Must be able to maintain harmony and safety and obtain satisfactory work results from men assigned to the work;
11. Must know the principles of operation and the proper application of safety and fire fighting equipment installed on the properties to which assigned, and know the safety, first aid and resuscitation practices as prescribed by the Company; and
12. Must pass motor vehicle operator tests prescribed the Company; must obtain and maintain a valid State of Ohio Class A CDL Bureau of Motor Vehicles Operator’s License.
