What you will be doing

The Director of Bakery is responsible for leading divisions with the execution of merchandising priorities, displays, and sales initiatives throughout the company to exceed plan in driving sales, performance, and profits. They will serve as the Leadership link between National Merchandising Team and each Division’s Management Team to ensure all merchandising programs and marketing campaigns are developed with division, store and neighborhoods demographic needs based on customer preferences. The Director of bakery will lead innovation development for workflow methodology, customer segmentation, store and division specific merchandising by clearly communicated and leading divisions with planning and execution. The Director oversees all implementation of consumer centric food solutions, using lean/agile workflow and production processes, combined with automation and technology solutions. This role is responsible for managing and driving the roadmap for the Bakery business unit, collaboration with multi-level stakeholders across the organization. Director of Bakery Operations ensures we are building, developing and maintaining innovative and effective customer experiences across all our Bakery products. They will work cross-functionally to resolve complex day-to-day back of house and customer facing ecosystems and site issues to ensure we meet our Bakery roadmap goals. The Director of Bakery should be current on all industry innovation and trends in Bakery; driving innovation on new products, merchandising, marketing, sourcing, and space planning techniques to improve our competitive advantage. The Bakery Director will lead 4Ps, leading each Sales Manager to utilize Product, Place, Price and Placement

The position will be based in Boise, Idaho, or one of our main regional offices (Seattle, WA, Portland, OR, Pleasanton CA, Denver CO, Dallas TX, Chicago, IL, or Fullerton, CA, Phoenix, AZ). 

Main responsibilities

Lead the work with our Division Management Teams on maintaining National/Division store and brand standards. Develop and lead our Division Management Teams on strategic and tactical execution of National/Divisional marketing plans including all Our Own Brand & Hero Category programs. Ensure and lead strategies and develop best practices for our Division Management Teams for increasing sales and running efficient operations while teaching and training, as necessary. Lead initiatives with our Division Management Teams to ensure project objectives and communications are supporting individual store goals and targeted outcomes. Develop relationships with our Division Management Teams to gain commitment in the consistent execution of merchandising plans and initiatives.  Develop and lead Division Management Teams on identifying, training, and developing future leaders, creating a culture of development for the companies’ long-term success. Own and drive national campaigns supporting National investment planning with our Division Management Teams to ensure marketing campaigns and offerings are tailored to meet local needs and properly reflect the appropriate demographic.  Drive deep understanding of T&P customer taste and preferences maximizing unit/dollar share growth MULO and Food through demographic segmentation leading Division Management Teams on Bakery space planning layouts to ensure future new and remodeled stores include optimal layout and future strategic initiatives. Develop, test, pilot, and scale national roll out with Best in Fresh processes and merchandising plans.  Drive core SKU optimization, provide direction, coaching and lead analytical merchandising and product data reports creating national and local solutions across the Division/Store level and work to solve any problems or issues with sales, profit, inventory, shrink, space planning, etc.  Drive OWN Brand penetration growth with our Division Management Teams.  Develop new product innovation, merchandising trends and platforms throughout the industry that can positively impact our sales and merchandising objectives.  Develop communication plans, guidance with Marketing team nationally and locally that resonate in winning customers for life and in multiple communication channels. Develop capex plans based on lifestyle T&P Taste and preference needs for existing and new stores to determine best ROI for Capex investment spend. Lead Division Management Teams where investment will grow best based on consumer segmentation for corporately planned capital expenditure projects.  Lead best practice development for Food Safety & Sanitation implementation to ensure each Division is compliant with all legislative, regulatory or company policies as they pertain to country of origin, bio-engineered, food handling, and other food safety guidelines.  Lead the scope, technical development, and optimization of production and workflow processes combined with automation to ensure the Best in Fresh products for one best way standardized programs. Serve as the subject matter expert in Bakery to operate as a communication funnel with retail operations and food integrated solutions for our consumers. Use technology and data systems knowledge to identify, track, troubleshoot, resolve and/or escalate operational issues. Develop, lead and grow Omnichannel sales, units and market share Ensure best practices are documented, shared across divisions for increasing sales, improving shrink, and running efficient operations while teaching and training, as necessary. Develop business cases as needed for new strategic initiatives that deliver revenue growth and/or client-centric experiences, securing buy-in from division and regional leadership team stakeholders. Prepare, analyze, and distribute reports to support business needs. Identify opportunities to improve or expand reports to make them more actionable.

The salary range is $118,100 to $165,980 annually. Starting salary will vary based on criteria such as location, experience, and qualifications. There may be flexibility for exceptional candidates. Benefits include medical, dental, vision, disability and life insurance, sick pay (accrued based on hours worked), PTO/Vacation Pay (accrued based on hours worked) or Flexible Time Of, paid holidays (9days annually), bereavement pay, and retirement benefits (pension and/or 401K eligibility). Associates in this position are also eligible for a quarterly bonus.

Ability to apply strategic and analytic thinking to develop industry leading retail programs. Strong knowledge of marketing programs, advertising, impacting customer demand, sales, and financial results. Proven leadership and ability to lead by influencing others without direct authority, both formally and informally. Ability to create an environment that fosters learning, teaching, growth, risk-taking, and innovation. Balances the needs of multiple stakeholders while maintaining strong executive level partnerships. Track record of creating innovative solutions that is differentiated and value-added for the customer. Highly self-motivated and self-learner that assumes personal accountability for results and performance that has a passion for lifelong learning and personal development. Demonstrated track record as proactive trusted advisor/leader in an organization, particularly around strategic issues to drive results. Advanced knowledge of financial modeling and forecasting based data metrics and findings. Solid knowledge and understanding of the drivers of sales and marketing plans and their impact on profit, revenue, and volume. Proven ability to objectively interpret research, extract insights, link to strategies, and communicate in a motivating way. Ability to implement innovative plans in reaction to a range of business and consumer challenges and to sell these programs to our Division Management Teams. Ability to track and monitor results from multiple on-going merchandising plans across our divisions. Ability to ask strategic and tactical questions leading to identification of root causes of problems; communication skills to motivate others to take action to address root causes and create solutions. Solid knowledge of interpreting and reviewing financial information, P & L statements, and skills to determine relative revenue impact on income of merchandising programs.  Strong skills in researching multiple data bases/sources around products to develop cases to educate retail management that will lead to actions.

We believe the successful candidate has these qualifications and experience:

Bachelor’s Degree preferred or equivalent work experience. 10-15+ years retail Bakery merchandising and operations experience including perishable and non-perishable products and programs  5-8+ years Division and or National level retail Bakery operations, merchandising, marketing, and finance experience. Travel requirements: Company-wide, 75% or more
