Job Functions, Duties, Responsibilities and Position Qualifications:

Position Summary:

Sonic Reference Laboratory is the national reference laboratory for Sonic Healthcare USA. The Molecular Technologist III position serves as a technical expert within the laboratory. Responsible for performing the most complex clinical assays and serves as the primary technical trainer for junior staff.   Leads special projects related to assay optimization through experimentation and collaborative research with other scientific staff and leadership.  Participates in technical transfer of new assays from R&D staff into the clinical laboratory.  Performs advanced troubleshooting on instrumentation and methodologies and liaises with vendors on applicable methodologies.  Manages assigned technical area inventory and technical procedures. Presents updates, reports, and scientific demonstrations to laboratory staff.  Supports administrative tasks as needed related to the assigned laboratory area.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Performs high complexity clinical assays according to written SOPs Adheres to departmental policies and procedures to include quality control, quality assurance, and safetyContributes to general laboratory functions by keeping a neat work area, attending meetings, and complying with laboratory procedures and safety practicesAnalyzes reviews, and reports test and quality control results and takes remedial action when indicatedEnters and verifies data within the clinical LIMS system Reviews and Signs out laboratory reports as assignedMaintain analytical instruments, schedules authorized routine service, and maintains instrument documentationParticipates in process improvement workgroups as assignedWorks on complex projects with minimal supervisionCreates and validates in-house control materialsTrains and assesses personnel competencyWorks independently or as a team on process improvement projects as assigned by managementCompletes other duties as assigned by lab managementEdits/Drafts technical SOPs and provides detail and content for new proceduresWrites detailed reports and summariesMonitors laboratory data systems, conducts statistical metric analysisMakes recommendations for process improvement to managementCompletes proficiency testing online entries and alternative assessment reportsConducts internal process audits as assignedAssists in completion of self-inspection checklists as delegated by managementFiles documentation associated with daily production runsAssist with maintaining laboratory supply and inventory

Education and Experience:

Education:

B.S. degree in Medical Technology or Chemical, Biological, or Physical Science  AND five years of pertinent laboratory experienceOR an M.S. degree in Medical Technology or Chemical, Biological, or Physical Science AND three years of pertinent laboratory experience

Licensure and Certifications:

Required

Preferred

Certified as Medical Technologist, Clinical Laboratory Scientist, or Molecular Biology by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) OR equivalent certification

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 

Experience with CLIA regulated clinical laboratory policies, goals, and objectivesGood communication skills and ability to collaborate within diverse groupsTechnical expertise on high complexity methodologiesWorks with initiative, independence, and demonstrates good judgmentAbility to understand and follow implemented written procedures and verbal instructionsIndependently able to collect and analyze data using graphs, tables, charts, and mathematical calculations and write accurate and concise reports and procedures.Advanced computer skills including MS Excel, Word, Outlook, & PowerPointBasic understanding of VBA codingOperational knowledge of complex lab automation and networked lab systemsAbility to work with frequent interruptions and fluctuations in workloadAbility to handle multiple priorities and manage stress appropriately
