Molecular and Tissue Culture Core Manager
Location: Albany, NY Category: Promotional Posted On: Wed Mar 12 2025 Job Description: The Molecular and Tissue Culture Core Manager is a member of the instructional support staff within the Life Sciences Research Initiative. The Manager supervises a sophisticated maintenance program of the core's critical equipment, trains faculty, students and researchers on the equipment, assists with experiments using the equipment, and works on research, grants and other funding opportunities to enhance the core. Essential Functions: Facilities and Operations + Oversees the training of core facility users and associated personnel, which may include running educational courses, workshops, and/or seminars on facility equipment and/or own field of expertise. + Supervises a sophisticated maintenance program involving critical equipment. + Develops and implements maintenance schedules, procedures, and techniques so that the facility and equipment remain operational and comply with applicable safety standards. + Develops and manages facility operational systems such as billing programs, equipment or facility reservation programs, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and applicable archiving systems. + Responsible for optimization of facilities and equipment, including remaining current on emerging techniques, software programs, and instrumentation. + Coordinates the installation of new equipment and repair of existing equipment with university personnel, manufacturer's field representatives or service contractors. + Meets monthly with the Life Sciences director, Chemistry Core director, building manager and Assistant Dean of facilities to ensure the financial health and smooth operation of the facility and assists in specifying and implementing modifications or upgrade and annually consult with faculty to consider future equipment or service needs, new technologies, educational and outreach activities, and career development. Research Support + Write research grants in collaboration with Life Sciences faculty to secure funding for new instrumentation and/or facilities upgrades. (NIH S10, C06, internal UAlbany grants, and other external sources of funding). + Work with Life Sciences faculty and other stakeholders to develop and optimize experimental approaches and assays using core facilities equipment in support of current and future research funding. + Collaborates with Life Sciences faculty on research as time and effort on other responsibilities permit. + Other reasonable duties as assigned. Functional and Supervisory Relationships: + Reports to the Associate Director of CAS Technical Services + Has a dotted-line reporting relationship to Scientific Director of LSRB for time spent on research grants and research collaborations Job Requirements: + Must have excellent communication skills and be adept at fostering partnerships and collaborative research efforts with institute, university, and external partners. + Excellent time management and organizational skills. + Proficiency in MS Office suite, Adobe, and scheduling software. + Ability to present educational courses or seminars on core pieces of equipment and procedures. Working Environment: + Laboratory and office setting + Works with chemicals, tissue samples, and highly sensitive equipment Job Requirements: Required Qualifications: + Master's degree in the Life Sciences, such as Biology, Chemistry, Physics, or relevant field from a college or University accredited by the US Department of Education or internationally recognized accrediting organization. + 3 years of experience using or maintaining molecular and cell biology equipment and instrumentation, such as plate readers, specialized microscopes, fluorometer, etc. + Demonstrated ability to train users at varying skill levels + Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively across multiple academic disciplines/units/departments + Applicants must demonstrate an ability to develop inclusive and equitable relationships within our diverse campus community + Applicants must demonstrate an ability to support diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and belonging relative to their role Preferred Qualifications: + Ph.D. in the Life Sciences, such as Biology, Chemistry, Physics, or relevant field from a college or University accredited by the US Department of Education or internationally recognized accrediting organization. + Experience working in a core facility + 4+ years of experience using or maintaining molecular and cell biology equipment and instrumentation, such as plate readers, specialized microscopes, fluorometer, etc. + 1+ years experience training users at varying skill levels + Demonstration of working collaboratively across multiple life sciences disciplines through publications.
