**Overview**
M Health Fairview has an immediate opening for an Mohs Technician to join our team at the M Health Fairview Bloomington Dermatology Clinic. Our clinic hours are 7AM to 4PM Monday - Friday, so no evenings, weekends, or holidays - this provides an excellent work life balance!
This is a 1.0 FTE (80 hours per two week pay period) opening, Monday - Friday eight hour shifts.
Ths role is eligible for benefits coverage.
Training will take place at Minneapolis/Maple Grove/Bloomington and potentially Wyoming dermatology
**Responsibilities Job Description**
The MOHS Technician is responsible for preparing and processing frozen tissue specimens for microscopic evaluation and review by the Mohs surgeon ensuring appropriate quality controls and logs, maintaining MOHS laboratory equipment, and ensuring laboratory compliance with CLIA and other regulations. The MOHS Technician possesses working knowledge of the laboratory, performs routine and specialty procedures, recognizes problems, identifies basic causes, and makes corrections using established protocols. The MOHS Technician may assist the physician with surgical cases as needed and works directly under physician supervision
Follows established guidelines to obtain specimens (tissue) and prioritize work. Performs complex histological procedures, analyzes and corrects problems using scientific principles. Receives and organizes incoming tissue specimens. Properly performs grossing techniques to embed tissue ensuring complete representation of tissue orientation and surgical margins. Prepares sections of human tissue for immediate examination using rapid tissue processing and frozen section technique. Perform initial screening under microscope to ensure tissue preparation meets laboratory requirements. Perform immunohistochemical staining.
Comply with all OSHA, CLIA and HIPAA regulations in the performance of all aspects of the position. Performs Quality Assurance testing as specified in the laboratory procedures. Orders reagents and all other laboratory material to ensure adequate supplies. Evaluates equipment and reagent systems as specified in the laboratory procedures.
Maintains manual and computerized logbooks and slide files. Performs instrument maintenance, utilizing established protocols. Keeps the laboratory clean and orderly ensuring a safe environment with the highest quality of efficiency and workflow Prepare patients' charts, forms, instruments, and equipment needed for surgery and patient care.
Properly verifies patient identity, take detailed patient history, and have patient properly draped for the exam, prepare for surgery and assist surgeon. Provides patient education, patient scheduling, follow up care instructions per physician direction, and other related clinic duties associated with the Mohs practice.
Responsible for oversight of maintenance of the biopsy (positive) and Mohs case log book. Assists with logging in biopsy results and other record keeping procedures. Assesses integrity of all specimens for testing/processing.
Verifies correct identification of specimens/tissue before testing/processing. Follows established guidelines for determining priority of specimen testing/processing and procurement. Making judgments as needed for different tissue types, embed and section samples, examine sections of embedded tissue under microscope to ensure data integrity, stain and cover slips for physician's analysis.
Assists physician with surgical cases based on direction by the clinician. Delivers care as delegated by the physician/authorized practitioner or RN, to assigned patient population, or individual patient. Follows the patient’s plan of care. Prioritizes work based on patient acuity, available resources, patient/family preferences, provider schedule, in collaboration with the physician/authorized practitioner and other health care team members.
Performs high and low risk technical procedures, including medications, defined by the clinical setting. Recognizes when different approaches may be needed based on age or cultural differences.
Implements assigned aspects of the patient teaching plan. Documents care in the medical record. Effectively communicates compliance and concerns to delegating physician/authorized practitioner/RN. Takes action to assure continuity of care for all assigned patient. Adheres to all relevant policies, procedures, and practice guidelines.
Responds appropriately to emergent situations. Functions as care team assistant as needed.
Communicates effectively with other members of the health care team. Communicates verbal and written information in a clear, concise, accurate, and timely manner. Uses communication approaches appropriate to patient/family needs
As a member of the care team, continuously improve work processes, environment and the overall experience to serve customers and meet business goals. Identify opportunities for improvement in workflow. Participate in meetings to support initiatives. Engage in change to improve the work environment and patient experience. Demonstrates ability to provide care or service adjusting approaches to reflect developmental level of population served.
**Qualifications**
**Required**
Education:
Graduate of a Medical Assistant program or Associates in Applied Science in Histotechnology
Experience:
2 years patient care experience as a Medical Assistant, LPN, or working in a lab setting in a Dermatology/MOHS clinical or Histology lab setting
**Preferred**
Education:
Graduate from a Histology Technician program (2 yr) with an Associate Degree in anatomic laboratory science which includes the completion of an internship.
Experience:
3-5 years of previous experience in a laboratory setting preferred.
Proficiency in frozen tissue sections and CLIA standards
License/Certification/Registration:
HHA approved laboratory certification, HT (ASCP)
