MEDICATION AIDE Reports To: Charge Nurse FLSA Status: Hourly / Non-Exempt POSITION SUMMARY The Medication Aide administers medications and provides direct care to patients under the direction, supervision, and in collaboration with a Registered Nurse. ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES  Administered prescribed medications following the six rights of medication administration and in accordance with medical provider’s order according to scope of practice.  Observes patients for drug reactions and promptly reports concerns to the nurse.  Performs all tasks associated with medication administration including accurately obtaining and documenting patient vital signs, calculating medication dosages, and stocking the medication cart.  Thoroughly document all care provided, patient response to care, and patient refusals of care.  Ensure compliance with company policy as well as federal, state, and local regulations.  Seeks guidance from nurse as needed to perform medication administration tasks safely and efficiently.  Reports any medication error to the nurse immediately.  Properly stores medications; dates and initials opened containers.  Properly prepares medication for administration using appropriate tools (dosage cups, gloves, pill crusher)  Maintains a clean, well-stocked, and organized medication cart and medication room.  Prepares all supplies on medication cart prior to the start of shift.  Keeps keys to medication cart on person at all times; keeps medication cart locked when unattended.  Performs count of controlled medications and signs at start and end of each shift.  Provides adequate fluids and observes patient to ensure medication is swallowed. JOB DESCRIPTION: Medication Aide 2 of 3 REVISED 05/2023  Records medication not administered per order and promptly notifies nurse.  Respond to call bells, signal lights, intercoms, and patient requests for assistance in a timely manner.  Immediately communicate changes in patient condition to licensed nurse.  Operates all equipment / devices according to guidelines / operational instructions.  Complete frequent room rounds to ensure clean, orderly, and safe patient environment.  Participates in the admission / discharge / transfer process.  Perform properly cleaning and disinfection of equipment and devices in accordance with company standards and guidelines.  Review and investigate patient, family, and staff concerns; take action to resolve and prevent reoccurrence.  Participates in training / precepting of new staff.  Attend staff meetings / in-services as needed.  Completes all required trainings in a timely manner.  Performs other duties as necessary for the successful operation of the healthcare center. PREREQUISITES, SKILLS, & ABILITIES  One year of previous medication aide experience preferred.  Active, unencumbered certification as a Medication Aide in the state of employment; or authorization to practice as a Medication Aide in accordance with guidelines from the appropriate board of certification.  Excellent written and verbal communication skills.  Strong ability to make independent decisions and work without direct supervision.  Ability to deal tactfully with personnel, residents, family members, visitors, government personnel, and the public.  Must have thorough knowledge of current standards of nursing assistant practice.  Must be knowledgeable of computer systems and applications.  Excellent customer service focus.
