MEDICAL TECHNOLOGIST/MEDICAL LAB TECH - BLOOD BANK

Position Summary:

Performs a variety of laboratory procedures under supervision, following procedures and instructions as outlined in procedure manual(s) using standard and specialized techniques, instrumentation and equipment on a variety of biological specimens to assist physician in diagnosis and treatment of patients. Exercise professional judgement to recognize, prioritize, and facilitate varying test requests and workload in an efficient manner.

Department Summary:

The laboratory delivers comprehensive clinical testing in Blood Bank. Its primary clients include the Emergency Department, Surgery Centers, Cancer Centers, and Inpatient Units, as well as outpatients of the Aultman Health System and Aultman Laboratory Services clients. The Blood Bank department performs nearly 70,000 tests annually.

Qualifications:

Bachelor of Science degree, including twelve-month training in an approved program for Medical Laboratory Science, with certification or certification eligible as a Clinical Lab Scientist by an approved certifying agency. Willingness and ability to fill the CLIA role of General Supervisor and Technical Consultant as defined by CAP. Prior experience is preferred but not required.

Must be detail oriented and have excellent critical thinking skills to recognize anomalies/inconsistencies that can occur. Ability to work under stress, work well with others and independently, communicate test results effectively to coworkers, physicians, nursing units, and/or other authorized personnel in a professional fashion. Manual dexterity sufficient to operate, maintain and troubleshoot laboratory equipment, identify, and correct technical problems. Assumes accountability for demonstrating behaviors consistent with the expectations defined in the employee handbook, HR and departmental policies. Demonstrates annual successful completion of all regulatory required testing related competencies. Must be adaptable to changing work environment or needs.

Responsibilities & Expectations:

The following job specific requirements are the essential duties and responsibilities required of the position.

Obtains, receives and/or processes a variety of biological specimens, as outlined in appropriate procedure manual, including verification and identification of patient and/or samples, requisitions, specimen type, transport and storage requirements. Performs variety of laboratory tests and procedures, following procedures and instructions as outlined in procedure manual(s) requiring use of standard and sophisticated/specialized instrumentation and equipment, in-depth techniques, limitation, and contraindications. Performs and documents appropriately quality control procedures including routine calibration, cleaning, preventive and emergency maintenance of equipment and instruments, documents appropriately corrective action taken, notifies Technical Specialist or Assistant Manager when assistance is needed. Perform instrument/equipment maintenance according to department guidelines and manufacturer's specifications. Receives and/or prepares reagents, solutions, and supplies, including labeling, storage, and quality control procedures.  Ensures appropriate levels of inventory of supplies are maintained by submitting requests to Technical Specialist or Assistant Manager as appropriate.  Maintains work area(s) in neat, clean, and orderly condition. Participates in orientation/training/mentoring of new personnel and/or students by providing a positive experiential learning environment. Communicates with hospital personnel politely and promptly regarding patient information, procedures, policies and/or problems. Communicates unusual test requests/questions outside of normal established procedure to Technical Specialist or Assistant Manager as appropriate. Exercise professional judgment to recognize, prioritize and facilitate varying test requests and workload in an efficient manner. Participate in quality improvement initiatives. Assist Technical Specialist with assigned duties. Think critically and work efficiently in high stress situations, such as Massive Transfusions and Traumas. Manage product inventory and ensure that inventory remains at a level necessary to support operations. Communicate effectively with colleagues and other clinical areas.

Working Conditions:

This unit requires 24/7 coverage. Shifts can be eight hours, ten hours or twelve hours; depending upon the needs of the department.  Shifts are variable to volume of department. Rotate as needed. Work weekends and holidays as assigned. Lunch periods and breaks are coordinated with other staff members to maintain adequate coverage. On call coverage is assigned to cover the department schedule

All procedures or other job-related tasks that involve an inherent potential for spills or splashes of, or mucous membrane or skin contact with blood, body fluids or tissues are Category I tasks. The use of appropriate protective measures is required for every employee engaged in Category I tasks.
