Medical Laboratory Technician

SUMMARY:   Performs, processes, analyzes, reports, and maintains records for laboratory testing for ORHC.  Follows established policies and procedures and maintains appropriate laboratory documentation.

 

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

Graduate of a formal laboratory training program and minimum of 1 year related experience. 

Associate Degree in Laboratory Science is required to perform highly complex testing.

 

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, and/or REGISTRATIONS: 

Certification by ASCP or NCA is preferred.

 

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (Partial meets, Meets, or Exceeds)

 

Accurately performs testing in all clinical area of the laboratory to include:  chemistry, hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, blood bank, serology, phlebotomy, immunology, and immunoassay.

 

Performs basic calibration, quality control checks and preventative maintenance steps on assigned instrumentation.  Initiates and follows through with basic troubleshooting of equipment as necessary or as assigned within established guidelines under the oversight of the Laboratory Manager.

 

Performs, logs, and completes corrective actions for quality control in all clinical laboratory departments.

 

Performs proficiency testing according to established policy.

 

Communicates laboratory data to appropriate departments and individuals in a timely and accurate fashion.

 

Assumes responsibility for distinguishing between normal and abnormal clinical laboratory parameters and takes actions to assure all abnormals are rechecked. Alerts appropriate staff for abnormal results and documents these actions.

 

Collects, receives, processes and transports blood and other laboratory specimens from patients following accepted standards of practice.

 

Performs clerical functions such as record keeping and filing as required.
