**The Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology** has an outstanding opportunity for a **Medical Laboratory Scientist Lead - Microbiology** .
**WORK SCHEDULE**
+ 100% FTE (40 hours per week)
+ Day Shift **DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION** A regional resource for clinical laboratory services required for innovative patient care, research and educational programs, the Department of Laboratory Medicine & Pathology combines the sophisticated testing and informatics capabilities of fully accredited laboratories with the resources of an academic institution in its delivery of clinical and anatomic pathology services. + The MLS Lead facilitates open communication within a section with staff. Staff feel empowered to express ideas and ask questions.
+ The MLS Lead keeps staff informed and involved as changes occur in their section.
+ The MLS Lead communicates with supervisors and faculty regarding the ongoing operation of the section, and keeps them informed of important issues as needed.
+ The MLS Lead directly coordinates practical solutions to service-related problems with medical staff or Research Testing Services staff, liaison, or clients. The MLS Lead consults with faculty/supervisor as appropriate."Computer Skills:
+ The MLS Lead understands and uses relevant functions in the LIS. Examples include MAQ, MQ, QC, LO, ANIQ, LJ, XXX, RE, and MIQ functions.
+ The MLS Lead maintains sufficient skill with personal computers to use e-mail as a communication tool, Word for preparing and editing procedures, Wiki for preparing and editing procedures also, and Excel for data reduction.
+ The MLS Lead assures that computer interface requirements are fulfilled. This includes the CAP required periodic validation.Leadership:
+ The MLS Lead provides daily leadership in the section to which they are assigned.
+ The MLS Lead establishes priorities of work to be done and assigns specific activities to technologists, students, etc
+ The MLS Lead assigns and reviews the work of other clinical technical staff within the section, provides fair and immediate feedback on problems with individuals. The MLS Lead notifies supervisors when issues are not resolved or of ongoing problems.
+ The MLS Lead acts as a mentor and provides direct feedback and guidance to individuals.Financial:
+ The MLS Lead reviews expenses for a section when designated by the supervisor.
+ With delegated authority, the CT Lead authorizes overtime activities by technologists working in the section.
+ The MLS Lead consults with supervisor about staffing requirements for the section as the needs change.
+ The MLS Lead orders (directly or by delegation) routine and specially needed supplies for their section and makes sure that section is well stocked. The CT Lead sets up standing orders and service contracts in their section.
+ The MLS Lead coordinates and facilitates method evaluation and development within the section to which they are assigned, and follows the written divisional protocol.
+ The MLS Lead implements follow-up or special studies for the faculty director, including gathering statistics, cost analysis, training, etc.
+ The MLS Lead contributes to performance evaluations of MLS 2s, MLS 1s and technicians, and meets deadlines set by supervisors or faculty.Teaching:
+ The MLS Lead oversees teaching/training of new employees, medical technology students, post-doctoral fellows and residents within the section.
+ The MLS Lead develops and maintains training logs for all of the tests performed in the section.QC/QA:
+ The MLS Lead knows CAP and JC requirements and actively assesses, initiates, and monitors compliance within the section.
+ The MLS Lead reviews QC of the section at least weekly or as appropriate. The MLS Lead uses good judgment to determine when QC indicates shift, drift or increased imprecision that requires troubleshooting or recalibration.
+ The MLS Lead takes appropriate action and informs faculty and supervisor of significant issues.
+ The MLS Lead initiates and oversees all aspects of Quality Assurance within the section including QC, maintenance, documentation, procedure review/update, etc.
+ The MLS Lead directs and reviews preventive maintenance and instrument care activities by staff members,
+ Scientific Instrument Division members, and by manufacturer's representatives.
+ The MLS Lead maintains theoretical and technical expertise for all procedures within the assigned section.
+ The MLS Lead works with faculty to resolve problems and/or improve methodologies as appropriate.
+ The MLS Lead is receptive to new ideas and procedures and adapts to new routines and schedules as necessary. **REQUIRED POSITION QUALIFICATIONS** A bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology with a curriculum accredited by the Committee on Allied Health Education and Accreditation of the American Medical Association AND certification or eligibility to take examination, with successful completion and certification within one year from date of hire, for certification with the American Society of Clinical Pathologist or equivalent, or certification with specialty organization appropriate to the laboratory division. **CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT** Employees working in Laboratory Medicine may be required to work in other departmental locations in order to meet patient service requirements, i.e. UWMC, HMC, CHRMC, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, SCCA, Roosevelt, etc. **ABOUT UW MEDICINE – WHERE YOUR IMPACT GOES FURTHER** UW Medicine is Washington’s only health system that includes a top-rated medical school and an internationally recognized research center.
