Summary
The Medical Laboratory Technician is responsible for testing requested analytes of patient specimens using manual or automated methodologies for use in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases, while following the established standards and protocols.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
These duties and responsibilities described below represent the general tasks performed on a daily basis; other tasks may be assigned.
Plan, organize, and prioritize work duties to accomplish work load and accompanying duties Comply with the established standards and practices/procedures Use proper techniques and equipment Assemble supplies and equipment and assure proper functioning and cleanliness Perform tests and procedures as ordered/requisitioned Follow outlines in procedure manuals Identify and label all specimens received and collected, then discard after tests or store for future reference Record, report, and post test results and findings as required File, mail, and/or call in reports Perform quality controls and quality assurance techniques per department protocols as requested Consult with and keep the Clinical Director informed of all activities, needs, and problems within the department Notify the Clinical Director of out of control, discrepant, or unexpected results within the expected time frame Correlate clinical data/diagnosis with test results for reasonableness and accuracy Offer/suggest alternative and/or repeat testing based on clinical data and diagnosis Monitor all test results, unknowns, controls, and standards and evaluate for accurate method/machine/sample performance Communicate clearly and logically with any and all persons involved in patient care to assure the highest quality of care is given Attend required hospital-wide orientations, meetings, and in-services Demonstrate a commitment to flexible work scheduling when necessary to ensure patient careEducation and Experience
Minimum Required Education: Graduation from an accredited MLT program
Preferred Education: B.S. in Biological Sciences or a related field
Experience: Prior experience is preferred, but will hire new graduates
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
Applicant must be MLT (ASCP) certified within 1 year of hire.
