Medical Instrument Technician (Diagnostic Ultrasound)
Summary Please note this position has a delayed start on or after 04 May 2025!! The Medical Instrument Technologist (MIT), Ultrasound (US),performs routine and complex diagnostic and vascular ultrasound imaging studies at TVHS Medical Imaging Service in Nashville and Murfreesboro, Tennessee. Requires advanced knowledge of complex and non-standard treatment in examination procedures and techniques. Responsibilities This specialty modality requires specific knowledgeable of cross-sectional human anatomy and its application in spiral, and/or, multi-slice computer tomography, inclusive of 3-D reconstruction scans, including drainages, biopsies, and peripheral vascular examinations. The technologist requires specific knowledge and training in the location, appearance, and function of the various major and minor systems susceptible to radiological illumination; to interpret the examination request accurately; to understand the functioning and inter-relationship of the various organs; to use the methods and techniques which will identify organs appearing on the digital display monitor, or on film, and the various stages of the examination to judge the acceptability of the image and/or scan for diagnostic use and to emphasize the aspects of particular interest to the physician. This subspecialty requires a. Duties include but not limited to: Performs ultrasound examinations with specialized advanced knowledge and assignments including abdominal, small parts, breast, OB/GYN, imaging guidance for procedures, vascular technology including color and spectral Doppler and duplex exams, ABIs with segmental pressures, upper and lower peripheral arteries, upper and lower venous duplex, extracranial, pseudoaneurysm and other imaging of the abdomen, neck, chest, and extremities, and retroperitoneal space for the purpose of acquiring high quality examinations that assist in the diagnosis and treatment of medical disorders. Responsible for maintaining accurate ultrasound records and worksheets so that recall of follow-up of a of patient examinations may be achieved. This requires maintaining proper record keeping, completion of associated documentation, knowledge of other modalities, skills to review prior imaging abilities and the ability to correlate that information with an ultrasound examination. Reviews new developments in the field and recommends to supervisor those that would improve the operation of the section. Possesses the ability to evaluate new products and equipment, making recommendations concerning developments which would improve operations within section and or service. Performs quality assurance testing on the ultrasound unit using phantoms, test tools, and or test check lists, etc. for the purpose of assuring peak performance of the ultrasound equipment. Maintains records of the quality assurance testing so that easy reference is available should servicing be necessary. Coordinated work for correction thru work orders to Biomedical Engineering. Performs and completes imaging studies within the established guidelines for stat, urgent, and routine exams. Performs or supervises routine housekeeping duties to assure that the ultrasound area is clean and sanitary. Assists in other areas of the department as needed for patient transfers, IV starts in Echocardiology and chaperone for Ultrasound procedures as needed. Provides the customers with consistent information according to established policies and procedures. Protects printed and electronic files containing sensitive data in accordance with the provisions of the Privacy Act of 1974 and other applicable laws, federal regulations, VA statutes and policy, and VHA guidelines. Protects the data from unauthorized release or from loss, alteration, or unauthorized deletion. Education: There are no specific educational requirements for this occupation. Licensure or Certification: Licensure or Certification is not required for this occupation; however, it is strongly desirable at GS-6 or above as evidence of possession of the essential knowledge, skills, and abilities. For certain functional areas at the higher levels or supervisory assignments, specific certifications appropriate to the specialty are indicated in this standard under "Titles and Certification/Registrations". Registration by Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) or by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) is highly desirable. Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications are also desirable. May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Grade Determinations: In addition to the core competencies defined at the GS-10, positions at this grade may be lead, supervisory, or non-supervisory with specialized advanced knowledge and assignments. At least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level (GS-09), which is directly related to the duties of the position to be filled, and must fully meet the KSAs at that level. This would be specialized experience which demonstrates possession of the knowledge required in order to provide all aspects of diagnostic ultrasonography services. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following technical KSAs and the potential to acquire the assignment specific KSAs designated by an asterisk (*) Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. KSAs 1, 2, and 3 are appropriate for all positions at this level. KSAs 4 and 5 are to be used in accordance with their appropriateness for the specific assignment. Advanced knowledge of the most complex and non-standard treatment and examination procedures and techniques. *Ability to plan and assist in the establishment of a completely integrated treatment and examination program. *Ability to evaluate new products and equipment and make recommendations concerning developments which would improve operations. *Ability to manage the fiscal matters of the functions supervised (which would include fund controls, contracts, and equipment expenditures), forecast resource and equipment needs, and administer the allocated budget. *Knowledge of and ability to provide the full range of supervisory duties which would include responsibility for assignment of work to be performed; performance evaluation; selection of staff; and recommendation of awards, advancements, and, when appropriate, disciplinary actions. Preferred Experience: Advanced ARRT certification in Computed Tomography (CT). Physical Requirements: The physical demands of the work require extended periods of sitting, moderate walking, and standing. Work involves constant bending, lifting, twisting, and carrying moderately heavy items, or moving equipment around, such as the ultrasound machine. The work requires moderate lifting, usually less than 50 lbs. The work requires pushing wheelchair and stretcher patients. Positioning patients who are disabled on the stretcher requires considerable effort and working in awkward positions. Lifting of totally incapacitated patients is done only with the help of lifts and/or other employees.
