Position Summary
The Medical Assistant is responsible for working under a licensed practitioner, or nursing personnel to provide direct patient care. This person will check patients in upon their arrival. Using the EMR, the MA will obtain vital signs, review medication lists, family and social histories, and review the medical records for completeness before the physician sees the patient. This person makes sure appropriate supplies are available for the patient's visit and any procedures as well as makes sure that the rooms are clean and safe. Additionally the MA will support physicians and nurses with in office procedures and maintain any logs within the clinic such as refrigeration and sample medication logs.
Minimum Qualifications
Education
School Diploma or equivalent.
Credentials
Medical Assistant certification preferred. Certifications: BLS required. Medication Aide 40 hour required within 6 months. Renewal as required by the state to be completed every 2 years at the college. CPI preferred.
Demands
Sit and/or walk up to 9 hours daily
Moderate occasional lifting
Push and or pull patients in wheelchairs
Bend reach and stoop throughout the day
Carry 50 lbs occasionally
Assists with patient positioning for procedures.
Vision, hearing, and color vision within normal limits
Frequent computer use
Functions
Uses established protocols or teaching plans to ensure quality patient care and adheres to provider preferences for their patients. Participates in the explanation of procedures, treatments and reinforces provider recommendations to patients using the AIDET process.
Provides prescribed sample medications in accordance with approved nursing techniques. Administers injections/immunizations as prescribed by providers and within the scope of the Mediation Aide certification.
Uses EHR to record visit, medication(s) and entry of patient information such as vital signs, , medication lists, family and social history accurately as well as provides point of care testing. Records test results, and other procedural documentation in patient chart and reports to licensed practitioner for further instructions or sign off.
Maintains sample medications by logging their receipt. Distribution of sample medications must be documented in the patient's chart. Sends written, verbal or computer generated requests for prescription refills to pharmacies as requested by provider.
Tracks lab and procedure orders. Communicates clinical data test/procedure results accurately to the healthcare team.
As directed by physician, nursing personnel or clinic policy MA communicates patient education and plan of care to patient/family/guardian. Documents patient understanding of instructions given in the patient's chart.
Completes and documents patient phone calls in the patient's chart.
Does not deviate from existing plan of care without first communicating to the licensed practitioner for an updated plan of care.
