Our 3-year Mechatronics Maintenance Technician Apprenticeship programme offers a unique opportunity to develop technical expertise in mechanical, electrical, and electronic engineering while honing your problem-solving skills. You’ll play a vital role in maintaining critical equipment used by Fire and Rescue Services across the country, ensuring national resilience for major incident response.
About the programme
At Babcock, we play a vital role in maintaining and servicing essential emergency equipment. Our work demands precision, technical excellence, and a commitment to ensuring every piece of equipment functions flawlessly when it’s needed most.
As an apprentice, you’ll work within our Technical Team, which operates across two specialised units:
Mobile Maintenance Units (MMU): Based across England, MMUs provide first-line repairs. If necessary, they escalate equipment issues to the Workshop Team for more in-depth mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic, and electronic repairs down to the component level. Workshop Team: This team carries out second-line maintenance and repairs on equipment sent from the MMU or undergoing annual servicing. Their work includes inspections, calibrations, certifications, and complex component-level repairs.
During your apprenticeship, you’ll gain hands-on experience with both teams, learning from skilled professionals and developing the expertise needed to qualify as an Engineering Technician.
Your education/training
You’ll receive both practical and theoretical training in addition to the on-site training you’ll receive at Bardon Hill, Leicestershire.
You'll work towards obtaining the IfATE Mechatronics Maintenance Technician Apprenticeship standard, gaining the qualifications, skills, and experience essential for a successful engineering career. This includes completing a Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering.
This apprenticeship aligns with professional standards set by the Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET) and the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) for Engineering Technician status.
Future prospects
Upon successfully completing the apprenticeship, you will become a qualified Engineering Technician within our Technical Team, with a starting salary of approximately £30,000.
Career progression opportunities allow you to specialise in a particular engineering discipline or continue as a multi-disciplined engineer, both of which offer excellent long-term prospects.
