Within the larger Avionics division of Collins Aerospace, our Sensors business is a world leader in the design, development, and manufacture of air data systems and air data probe products. At Sensors, our precision instrumentation for commercial, military, as well as business and regional jet aircraft are responsible for providing critical parameters to the aircraft for navigation, safety and efficient operation in some of the most demanding environmental conditions.

As part of the Sensors team based in Burnsville, Minnesota, you will be working on teams to develop new, advanced aircraft air data products as well as supporting existing products in manufacturing. As a Mechanical Engineering Intern, you will gain exposure to and support in the mechanical aspects of various phases of a development program from requirements development through design and test to implementation at full rate production. You will also provide technical support to our operations teams on programs currently in production. As an engineering intern in our business, you will have access to a world class wind tunnel, environmental test lab, and forensics investigation lab to help our team continue delivering industry leading air data solutions.

What You Will Do:

Participates in product development activities, executes tests, and produces parts, designs, or sketches, following all appropriate Mechanical Engineering design, safety, and qualification standards. Participate in product development activities including cost estimates, implementation of standard specifications, drawing board layout, and development of performance or maintenance requirements. Execute tests for systems, sub-systems, and components. 

What You Will Learn:

Learn test models of alternate designs and processing methods to assess operating condition effects. Produce parts, designs, or sketches for machines, components, systems or work orders / purchase requestsLearn about applied research to the planning, design, development, and testing of mechanical and/or electromechanical systems, instruments, controls, engines, and/or machines. Gain knowledge in research, plans, designs and develops mechanical products and systems in areas including, but not limited to, mechanical, thermal, hydraulic, thermodynamic, or heat transfer for production, transmission, measurement, and use of energy. 

Qualifications You Must Have:

Requires a High School Diploma or equivalent and student must be pursuing a Bachelor’s or advanced degree in an applicable discipline.U.S. citizenship is required, as only U.S. citizens are authorized to access information under this program/contract.

Qualifications We Prefer:

Fluency in a Microsoft Office environmentBasic knowledge of CAD tools (CREO is preferred) including both modeling and 2D drawingsDemonstrated writing and communication skills, and an ability to work in a cooperative environmentDemonstrated ability to get hands on, work independently and support all mechanical aspects of a small size projectAdditional technical skills are preferred in the areas of measurement, instrumentation, and environmental testing. Pursuing a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or Aerospace Engineering degree.

Onsite: Employees who are working in Onsite roles will work primarily onsite. This includes all production and maintenance employees, as they are essential to the development of our products. Must be a commutable distance to Burnsville, MN to work an onsite schedule. This position may be eligible for relocation.

The salary range for this role is 37,000 USD - 82,000 USD. The salary range provided is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels. RTX considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the role, function and associated responsibilities, a candidate’s work experience, location, education/training, and key skills.

Payments under these annual programs are not guaranteed and are dependent upon a variety of factors including, but not limited to, individual performance, business unit performance, and/or the company’s performance.
