Summary:

Reports directly to the Rail Services manager. Is responsible for all project mechanical design, associated drawings, loading and support calculations, FEA, BOM’s, operational and maintenance manuals contribution. Working with electrical engineering to specify motors and related electrical components into the assemblies. Travel for both new projects and ongoing maintenance contracts involving mechanical troubleshooting is required. Total travel required is approximately 15% of the job.

Typical Duties:

Engineering Work: Will work on producing engineering designs and related documentation as may be assigned from time to time by the Rail Services Manager. Must follow the customer specifications and other requirements established in the design reviews for the assigned engineering projects. Will also work on the standardization of Nabholz drawings and design procedures and existing product lines, in order to help facilitate the company’s ongoing continuous improvement effort. Product Innovation Efforts: Work on new product development efforts and on the improvement of existing products, as directed by the Rail Services Manager. ISO Quality Program: Will help to develop and fully comply with the company’s ISO quality development initiative. DFM or Design for Manufacture: Will fully embrace and help facilitate the company’s ongoing DFM initiatives, including participating in various continuous improvement activities related to the company’s products and work processes. Miscellaneous Other Tasks: Will also assist the Rail Services Manager in other areas of the company’s operations, to the extent required (such as assisting the Purchasing Manager in specifying new materials or component parts). Safety Sensitive position.

Qualifications:  

Mechanical Engineer capable of designing in a 3D cad environment. Either SolidWorks or Inventor. Able to create models, assemblies, BOM’s, and drawings for presentations and manufacturing of components and assemblies. Knowledgeable with using PDM or Vault management software for drawing and model control. Must be able to manage a project from concept to completion and perform face to face project update meetings with customers and clients, or using Skype, Go To Meeting, or other related software. Candidate should also be familiar with the operation of mechanical drive systems. Must have experience with the selection and sizing of motors, mechanical drive systems, hydraulics, gear drives, etc. Must be proficient with ASME and GD&T and have working knowledge of manufacturing processes. Candidate should understand ASME welding codes and application for specifying on drawings. Candidate must have BSME with 5 or more years of relevant work experience. Candidate should have experience with complex machine control system development, implementation, start-up, and troubleshooting of lifting systems desired. Occasional domestic travel required for customer visits, equipment start-up, and system maintenance and troubleshooting. Will need to be E-rail certified (Nabholz will train). Travel for this position is required approximately 15%.

Physical demands: 

Ability to continuously sit, stand, or walk. Ability to bend, squat, climb stairs, and lift frequently. May lift and carry heavy objects 5 -25 pounds frequently. Stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl in awkward positions continuously.

Work environment:

May require working from heights, or outdoors in all weather conditions. Possible exposure to harmful materials or chemicals, fumes, odors, loud noise, or dangerous machinery. Safety clothing, such as gloves, hardhats, protective chemical suits, and devices to protect their eyes, respiratory system, or hearing are required in customer’s facilities. While working in customer’s rail facilities, employees must be especially alert and follow all safely procedures and must deal with a variety of hazards.
