Hire Resolves Client is seeking applications suitable for qualified persons with experience in the Front End –
Maintenance or Steam and Power Generation (S&PG) – Maintenance and Operations for the
position of Mechanical Engineer- Maintenance. The position reports
to the Engineering Manager.
The successful incumbent will form part of the Factory Engineering Team and will be responsible
for providing leadership, technical guidance, specialized engineering support.

KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS
• Ensure optimal performance of all mechanical equipment in the Front-End / optimal
performance of the engineering and operational aspect of the S&PG section.
• Provide technical and overall leadership to personnel under the area of responsibility.
• Drive Maintenance improvements to optimise efficiency and output as well as availability and
reliability of equipment in area of responsibility.
• Provide expertise on a day-to-day basis on engineering related issues for Front-End / provide
expertise on both engineering and operations related issues for the S&PG section, support
and advise on solutions.
• Audit Front-End Maintenance team / audit S&PG Maintenance and Operations
• Audit and analyse maintenance systems for Front-End / audit and analyse maintenance and
operations systems for S&PG with the aim of uncovering inefficiencies and addressing them
accordingly.
• Develop Season and Off-Crop Maintenance budgets with Maintenance Manager, Section
Foreman, Operations teams, and Finance Business Partner. Effectively manage allocated
budgets.
• Responsible for Mechanical Engineering input into Capital / Abnormal & Maintenance
Projects, budget preparation and project execution in area of responsibility.
• Responsible for stop day and off-crop planning processes and effective execution thereof in
area of responsibility.
• Develop and drive improvement projects to ensure current assets are maximised to their full
potential within the maintenance budget.
• Promote cross-functional teams and stakeholder engagement with focus on teamwork.
• Engage effectively and collaborate with key suppliers/contractors.
• Identify and monitor KPIs to track performance and flag any issues in area of responsibility.
• Address production losses caused by inefficient maintenance or operations systems by
critically analysing and optimising the systems performance.
• Provide engineering and operations support for specifications and plant modifications.
• Responsible for the management of mechanical technical standards (Front-End) / mechanical
and operations technical standards (S&PG), specifications and group risk mitigation policies
and the governance thereof.
• Set direction, implement, and monitor continuous improvement by driving effective work
practices, and ensuring that tools and techniques are being applied to deliver high quality
workmanship in a safe and sustainable manner.
• Provide engineering support to the Front-End Operations team in terms of equipment settings
for the season
• Promote a culture of consistently assessing risks, adhering to safety requirements, and
promoting SHERQ compliance – drive safety as a way of life in the factory.
• Ensure continuous improvement by implementing functional best practices and conducting
physical inspections throughout the area of responsibility.
• Responsible for Statutory Requirements and legal appointments as delegated by the
Engineering Manager and required by the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
• Ensure effective implementation and sustainability of the Engaged Performance
Management systems (EPM).
• Model leadership behaviours, collaborating, partnering, and communicating effectively within
and between teams.
• Drive adherence to Group technical, risk and best maintenance practices and operations
standards and management of technical governance requirements.
• Promote and adhere to Illovo’s procedures, policies, and guidelines, including, without
limitation, those relating to SHERQ, Competition Law and Anti-Bribery and Corruption (ABC).
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
• Degree in Mechanical Engineering
• 3+ years’ – Engineer in a manufacturing environment – heavy industry would be an
advantage.
• Fully proficient on the maintenance requirements of the OSHACT
• Deep Root Cause Analysis skills and experience
• Continuous improvement knowledge and experience
• Familiarity with Illovo systems would be an advantage (Maximo)
