Overview Perform simple repair work to clean, check, inspect, repair, maintain, and install station equipment and apparatus. Responsibilities GENERAL DUTIES The normal duties may include but are not limited to: Employee will be knowledgeable of and follow all safety rules, procedures and practices. Employee acting in conjunction with supervision or individually as directed by supervision must be willing to direct the training of other employees in the correct operating procedures necessary to fully satisfy the classification duties of Mechanical Repair Helper or other duties with which the employees is familiar. Employee will, when directed by supervision, report to assigned locations for the purpose of receiving training and will actively participate in the training activities. Employee will carry out assignments in training for and/or performing fire fighting and first aid. Employee will exhibit an adequate competency level pertaining to activities delineated in the Duties and Qualifications sections of this job classification. Demonstrate such competency via performance of job duties and training and testing programs administered at intervals prescribed by Louisville Gas and Electric to assure correct classification of employees. Employee will, during the normal performance of his duties, watch for and promptly report to supervision any damaged or defective equipment or conditions which may cause damage or injury. Employee will perform duties of lower or higher classifications that are incidental to the job and are within his/her capabilities including those needed for the purpose of training in the requirements of the higher classifications. Employee will keep all equipment, tools, materials and work areas in a clean and orderly condition. Employee will report as directed to any facility for any shift where needed. Employee will perform work in a responsible and cooperative manner to facilitate a positive working environment. Employee will compile information and generate reports, forms and documents as required. Employee will represent the Company to the community with attention to the highest standard of conduct, appearance and attitude. Employee will be loyal to the Company and support its policies, procedures and objectives. SPECIFIC DUTIES Duties which may include but are not limited to: Employee will perform simple work to check, inspect, repair, maintain and install station equipment and apparatus. Employee will assist employees of higher classification and supply them with the necessary tools, equipment and material; and upon completion of the job assist in gathering up and returning all such tools, equipment, and surplus material in a clean and serviceable condition. Employee will clean equipment undergoing repairs, handle and move material supplies and equipment in connection with the work and the work area. Employee will maintain the work area in a clean and safe condition. Employee will perform simple dismantling and assembly work, bolt and unbolt, wire brush, recondition and clean parts. Employee will learn the proper use of: hand tools, power tools, hoist, drill presses, grinders, and other tools and equipment pertaining to the work. Employee will operate these tools and equipment as directed. Employee will learn oxy-acetylene cutting and simple arc-welding. Employee will prepare work surfaces and areas, remove and install insulation, guards and housings on equipment. Employee will set up portable extension lights and blowers as directed. Employee will obtain refractory brick and tile, and prepare mortar mix for furnace repairs; assist in masonry work as directed. Employee will remove covering and insulation, prepare surfaces for recovering, mix mortar, install same. Employee will assist in simple electrical and instrument repair. Employee will clean oil coolers, oil filters, condensers and other station equipment. Employee will learn operation of equipment such as cranes, backhoes, tractors and vacuum trucks. Employee will assist in lubricating station equipment. Employee will operate vehicles for transporting men, tools, materials and equipment as assigned. Employee will assist in the erection and removal of scaffolding and rigging. Employee will assist, as directed, employees of any classification in carrying through work assignments. Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS FOR ENTRY INTO: GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS Employee must meet all general qualifications of employment. Employee must be able to speak, understand, read and write English, and be able to understand and carry out oral and written instructions. Employee must have education or knowledge equivalent to that normally represented by satisfactory completion of the requirements of a high school diploma, or equivalent. Employee must be able to learn to use the tools and equipment required in the work. Employee must be willing to become familiar with the Company Safety Rules and willingly comply with such rules. Employee must have a valid state driver's license and pass the Transportation Department's driver's test for operating Company vehicles. Employee must be willing to work inside and outside under varying weather conditions. Employee must be willing to report as directed to any facility for any shift where needed. Employee must be in good health and be able to perform the physical requirements of the job, which include work at heights and heavy manual labor. Employee must possess the willingness and ability to acquire the necessary knowledge and skills to advance to higher classifications. Employee must be willing and able to communicate through both verbal and written reports. Employee must be able to learn to make and read simple drawings and sketches. Employee must be able to obtain cooperation and satisfactory work from others assigned to work with him/her. Employee must successfully complete such entry level testing programs as are promulgated by Louisville Gas and Electric to measure job responsive aptitude, ability to retain knowledge and problem solving skills. Employee must be willing to satisfy all attendance criteria adopted by the Company pertaining to this classification.
