Full TimeDaysJob Summary: The Mechanical Circulatory Support (MCS) Program Coordinator coordinates the care and education of MCS device patients and their families from pre-operative contact through the post-operative period.
Minimum Education: Has completed the basic professional curricula of a school of nursing as approved and verified by a state board of nursing and holds or is entitled to hold a diploma or degree therefrom. Bachelor of Science in Nursing, preferred.
Licensure, Registration and/or Certification: Valid multi-state or State of Oklahoma Registered Nurse License. Basic Life Support (BLS). Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and/or Critical Care Registered Nurse (CCRN) license preferred.
Work Experience: Minimum 3 years of progressive leadership and related critical care work experience.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of regulations, requirements, and processes of INTERMACS, IRB and data management. Knowledge of post-implant management including medications, complications, interventions, and discharge planning. Knowledge of current theories, principles, practices, standards, emerging technologies, techniques, and approaches in the nursing profession. Ability to assess the patient’s understanding of and willingness to learn about MCS. Ability to prepare documentation in an organized, accurate, and clear manner. Ability to coordinate the care of MCS recipient throughout the spectrum of care including inpatient and outpatient settings to achieve optimal physical, social, and emotional rehabilitation.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities: Evaluates potential MCS (ECMO, VAD, Impella) patients using predetermined criteria, schedules testing, compiles information and presents findings to attending physicians. Educates MCS candidates and their caregivers of risks, complications, benefits, life-style changes, operation, maintenance, and ongoing care of their MCS equipment. Arranges all appropriate medical therapy and testing. Reviews and evaluates lab results and notifies physician of abnormalities as indicated. Manages intra-operative device assembly and management during device implant. Creates plans for post-operative preparation and education for discharge and follow-up needs. Collaborates with Primary Care Physicians and Advanced Practitioners to implement clinical interventions for all MCS patients throughout their care continuum. Participates in the development and maintenance of current education materials and provides ongoing education sessions to maintain staff competencies. Covers on-call responsibility for outpatients on MCS support which may require 24-hour coverage including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
Decision Making: Independent judgement in making decisions involving non-routine problems under general supervision.
Working Relationships: Coordinates the activities of others (does not supervise). Works directly with patients and/or customers. Works with internal and/or external customers via telephone or face to face interaction. Works with other healthcare professionals and staff. Works frequently with individuals at Director level and above.
