Materials Recycling Researcher

A research and development position is now open in the Materials Recycling R&D Group. The Applied Materials Division (AMD) at Argonne National Laboratory conducts applied research to develop sustainable innovative technologies to improve the efficiency of resource and energy utilization; to minimize our dependence on imported energy; and to enhance our national security. 

This position is focused on work utilizing a diverse range of lithium-ion battery recycling and metals/plastics recycling technologies. The candidate should have a good understanding of lithium-ion battery systems and performance characteristics and/or a good understanding of general metals/plastics separation and recycling operations. The position will involve R&D management on recycling methodologies, strategies, and bench-scale separation and materials processing technologies as well as scaled-up plant design, installation and operation. The candidate will manage several ongoing and new projects within the group’s portfolio and will work to develop and bring in new advanced project ideas. The candidate will be expected to lead proposal writing tasks and should have a drive to move technology from the lab to industry. Aiding in this task is the ability to create partnerships with other organizations. This position requires good project leadership, written and oral presentations to stakeholders. 

Position Requirements

Demonstrated experience and ability to lead and manage multiple research project teams.

Understanding of lithium-ion batteries and how they work.

Understanding of the materials used to make lithium-ion batteries.

Knowledge of materials separation equipment and techniques.

Ability to work with hand tools and building/adapting equipment.

Ability to work well within a team as well as alone.

Skilled in oral and written communication at all levels of the organization.  

Ability to model Argonne’s core values of impact, safety, respect, integrity, and teamwork.

Ability to make our laboratory a safe, welcoming, and accessible environment where all can thrive.

This position requires an on-site presence at the Argonne campus in Lemont, Illinois.

The selected candidate will be placed at the appropriate level (RD3 or RD4) depending upon depth and breadth of relevant knowledge, skills, and experience brought to the position.  The requirements for the desired levels are as follows:

RD3:  Bachelor’s and 8+ years, or Master’s and 5+ years, or PhD and 4+ years.

RD4:  Bachelor’s and 12+ years, or Master’s and 7+ years, or PhD and 6+ years.

Preferred Qualifications:

Knowledge of electrochemical performance of lithium-ion batteries.

Experience with equipment installations and start-up/debug.

Experience in process development and plant design.

Familiarity with Argonne’s process modeling efforts.

The expected hiring range for this position is $109,922.00 - $175,605.30.

The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as, but not limited to, the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, business considerations, internal equity, and external market pay for comparable jobs.
