Your Opportunity

Stantec’s Geotechnical and Materials Team is looking for a Materials  EIT to join our team in the Saint John, NB. As a Materials Engineer, you will have the opportunity to work on engineering projects in a multi-discipline project team environment. Working in our Saint John, New Brunswick office where many of Stantec’s design projects take place, in this role, the candidate will have opportunity to exercise their technical and interpersonal skills while growing in their career.

The role of a Materials EIT is to work on smaller projects, and/or as a team member of a larger project under the close guidance and supervision of a senior engineer. You will perform a variety of tasks which may include proposals, reporting, calculations, laboratory testing and field work. The projects that a junior materials engineer may be assigned to may be broad, varied and diverse in scope.

You will work closely with an experienced team of engineers and technicians to become part of our dynamic team.  Our team provides conventional and advanced field laboratory testing services for soil, rock, aggregates, and concrete. 

Your Key Responsibilities Working with a team of engineers and technologists/technicians performing general engineering responsibilities. Working on a variety of small to large projects spanning from transportation, power, mining, residential, commercial, and industrial developments. Assisting intermediate and senior engineers with the completion of geotechnical and material design and inspection which will include both field and office-based work. Assisting intermediate and senior engineers with developing and managing the project scope, budget, staffing and schedule.  Involved with construction materials testing and evaluation (e.g. field and laboratory testing of concrete, soils and hot mix asphalt). Preparation of proposals and technical reports. Coordinating  with other disciplines to ensure compatibility with the design intent.
Assisting in the review of shop drawings and submittals, responds to request for information, prepares site observation reports, and performs other contract administration tasks.
Attending project coordination meetings with internal team members and/or external consultants.
Participating in value engineering and basic cost estimating.
Actively participating in Stantec’s risk management and quality procedures. Leading by example within Stantec’s Health and Safety Framework. Planning and coordinating field and laboratory testing of construction materials. Interacting with a wide variety of clients from owners, and developers, to aggregate and ready mixed concrete producers. Providing Quality Control and Quality Assurance services. Your Capabilities and Credentials Ability to participate and collaborate in a project team setting and to engage in creative and critical thought. Requires understanding of Microsoft Office Suite. Developing cooperative skills in working efficiently within a team. Strong oral and written communication skills. Ability to work with minimum supervision and to communicate effectively with technical and management personnel remotely. Basic knowledge of civil systems, means and methods, materials, and industry standards. Registration with APEGNB (or other Provincial Engineering Body) or eligibility to be registered as an EIT is preferred. Field work is a large component of the duties as a junior material engineer and a valid driver’s license and availability of personal transportation is essential. Education and Experience Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from a recognized university.  

Field work may involve traversing difficult terrain and include exposure to the elements including inclement weather. Other work will be carried out in a typical office environment working with computers and remaining sedentary for long periods of time.
